I keep getting a big tangle of metal stuck under my car...

I have never run into this issue but it sounds like you are on the right path. If it only happens while moving, during hard left turn then it should be a related solution. Check for some type of debris that would connect with the wheel or rotor during a turn (maybe stuck in the A-Arms).
It can be difficult to tell if a noise is coming from the front or back while in the car but the noise might be related to the differential, only occurring when rear tire rotation is at a maximum difference. In this scenario the temperature of the diff gear may be the 'random' factor.
That was just my observation from the information I read. I certainly don't mean to get you worried about nothing... It's probably just a rock in the rotor.

It is REAL scary the first time for sure! Yep....got out and looked under the car. No issues since. Thinking back it must have been a rock lodged in the front right break.

I picked up a stone in mine just shortly after I got it. It cut a lovely deep groove in the rim where the stone was trapped between the brake caliper and the inside of the rim. It also made a serious racket when doing its job !!!!
