Survived the icepacolypse
Saturday was cold but nice and dry so I decided to drive my Aston. Ended up staying with some friends and their family Saturday night. Figured I'd be okay because the last time I had checked the forecast it said there wouldn't be any precipitation until Sunday afternoon.
Woke up Sunday to freezing rain. The white you see on the pavement is actual ice:

I'm on Michelin Pilot Super Sports, which are civil in the cold if you don't do anything silly. On ice - nope. I got home safe and sound but wanted to share a couple things (I'm sure most know this stuff but it might be a good reminder or something new for some people).

- These cars are fine to drive in the rain so long as you drive carefully (if you try to spin the tires, you will - and you risk going sideways and crashing).
- If you feel like the car is difficult to control in the rain even when being careful, there might be something wrong with your car.
- If you can feel the car edging sideways or the tires spinning when trying to accelerate forward (ESPECIALLY if you're doing so very slowly) you might not want to drive the car. You're on ice or hard-packed snow. Just because you can get the car moving forward, it doesn't mean you can make it stop. It's far, far more difficult to stop a car than get it moving. That's how accidents happen.
- It's better to be safe than sorry!

I've been through a couple of those!
One of the more intense weather moments I experienced was in Ramadi, Iraq. I was part of an LAV crew (Light Armored Vehicle... think 8-wheeled tank with less armor and smaller guns). We were in the back of the vehicle and all of a sudden there was a bunch of noise from stuff hitting us. We thought we were being lit up by small arms fire. So we locked and loaded and popped open a hatch... it was hail! We were getting pelted by hail anywhere from the size of marbles to the size of golf *****!
