New/used engine?

My 06 DB9 has the infamous "tick". Runs excellent, even when it ticks, but I want to go park it when the ticking starts. And the "fix" is leading up to engine removal. So I was wondering would it be more cost effective to just get a new/used engine? If used, what years are compatible with my 06? If I found another 06 engine, do I risk having that issue again?

I'm at a loss and I really don't want to get rid of the car. I really like it. But it's hard driving around sounding like an old ford (no disrespect to any ford owners, I own a Bronco also, which ironically doesn't tick with probably 200K miles).

Any suggestions?

How much is a new engine from UK? May not be a bad option if you are planning to keep car for a while.

I do plan on keeping it for at least 5 more years. I found this online brand new for $12,000. I'm not sure if this is compatible or if I can find a better deal elsewhere.

Shipping that lump from the Netherlands won't be cheap.

Why not touch base with the Bamford Rose outpost in Arizona about a rebuild?

That'll do just fine. If it is really new, jump on it. It's a bargain at that price.

$12k seems reasonable!

You might consider buying the new engine and then selling your existing engine to Bamford Rose so they can rebuild/upgrade it. That way, turn around time on V12 upgrades would be much quicker since they could have a freshly rebuilt motor to hot swap on standby. Of course, I'll charge Mike a commission per engine for coming up with the idea.

You might give Kevin Kay Restorations a call @ (530)241-8337 .
They are located in Redding, CA and could be a viable option for an engine rebuild that is closer to you.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will be exploring the advice given. But this really sucks for a high end car with only 40k miles..............

Prior the purchase of my current DB9 I was looking into buying one with engine damage myself. My initial plan was to buy the engine you're eying: I'd spoken with these guys in Holland (my native country as well) and they offered this brand-new engine at EUR 14k which is more then the USD 12K they market the engine in above link at. From memory the listed engine is no longer available, hence the higher price I got quoted.

I felt at the time that you can most probably spend less then EUR 14k to rebuild your current engine with forged pistons and such. Check out what Pavel did a while ago: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...e-rebuild.html

I ended-up buying a car without the issue but since you're having ownership already I'd consider getting it properly rebuild with high-performance parts instead.

Good luck!

PS: I can pass you the direct details of the chap in Holland if you want that. PM me for that.

sdekoning, thank you very much for the info. Rebuilding sounds like a cheaper option. That'll probably be the route I take.

DonL, I gave them a call. They only work on classics. But thanks for the help.

You might try giving this guy a call to see what a rebuild would cost.

It's unfortunate that they can't help you...were they able to give you any leads on a re-builder close to you?
