replacing NAVIGATION actuator/gear set - anyone have experience?

the first day I got my AMV8, my buddy pushed the NAV monitor down manually and broke the gears. I bought the gear replacement kit, but have not had the nerve to yank out the center panel to get the NAV monitor out. im scarred im going to break it. BUT, I do want it working again, as I use it sometimes, and its ghetto to be manually pulling it up to use it.

anyone do this before????
the guy at the AM dealer shop said you open it up and with both hands yank the panel up and it will come out without damage.

thanks
