Inside The Aston Martin DB11's 5.2 Turbo V12 video

Although a little hard to hear, lots of information presented.

Awesome video, thanks!

Fantastic packaging on the engine setup with the twin turbo system. And keeping it within 5-kg of the outgoing despite the extra hardware is really impressive.

516 lb-ft from ~1500 RPM, peak power of 600 HP at 6500 RPM, and 7000 RPM redline. Not too shabby. And I like the "easily 600 HP" comment... I'm willing to bet the Vanquish is going to get an uprated version of this engine.

Really interesting point about the oil system. There was a discussion on PH a long time ago about how the V8V's dry sump robs about 20 HP and Aston's engineers couldn't figure out how to optimize it (or something along those lines). I wonder how much power they'd have lost on the 5.2L V12TT with a dry sump?

The torque curve looks great, nice to see the engine still likes to rev

Interesting justification for the forced induction: it's the customers that want it. So there is no pressure to turbocharge for efficiency/governmentally legislated reasons?

Hooray for cylinder deactivation. Much better than 'stop/start' as fitted to some cars (for example, BMW, Jag) IMO.

Admittedly any clips of the sound that are currently on the internet are very limited, but it sure sounds muffled to me when compared to the outgoing V12.

I wonder how easy it will be for tuners to up the ante on these with bigger turbos, injectors, etc. People will turn a $200k car into a $300k car that will be worth less than a stock car at resale. You watch.

Looks like the coils are going to be accessible without tearing the whole top of the motor off? That would be good.

rscultho is infamous around these parts
I have owned two turbo charged cars...1993 Mit VR4...replaced both turbos after 4 to 5 years. Hopefully turbocharger technology, quality, reliability has improved alot since then.

The biggest issue with turbos used to be how they cook the engine oil. I suppose synthetic oil handles that issue much better, but does the turbo heat reduce the life of the oil/decrease oil change interval time?

This graph must be a representation, I have never seen a turbo HP graph that perfect.

Yes, it's a marketing graph - shows the general output of the engine. It isn't an actual dyno plot.

Figured it was, but you never know. Someone might have invented the perfect turbo.

If Aston took a page from BMW, they use the electronic wastegate to manage the torque curve. I have 135 Dinan and did before and after dyno runs, mostly what Dinan did was to hold the wastegate closed a little longer and let the boost build more.

So essentially they have the computer open the wastegate to hold the power where they want it.

The DB11's turbos have electronic wastegates

That is what I heard in the the video that DonL posted.
it's mentioned at about 3:14.
