So I have been having discussions with several petrol heads and there are so many opinions.

In the manual for Vanquish it states:

- The car should be on level ground
- The engine should be cold
- The engine oil level should read between the Min. and Max. marks.

SO... some say it should be exactly in the middle, some that it is not good for the engine if it is a the Max mark - as I read it as long as it is in between the marks it is fine - so even at the Max. mark it should be perfectly ok I think!

Thoughts?

 

Is the Vanquish wet or dry sump? (I know the V8s are dry, not sure about the V12s.)

On a wet sump engine, going above the max line can increase windage on the crank, which will prematurely wear bearings. I'd aim for somewhere in the middle, on such an engine.

On a dry sump engine, anywhere between the marks is fine, though I'd cautiously avoid the "min" mark.

but found this.. "a new oil pump and redesigned “high efficiency” wet sump - new pistons, valves, springs and even the cylinder block has been revised."

 

Wet sump. Mid to Max OK. Add 1Q/1L if at Min. Always check only when cold (no sooner than 10 minutes after shutdown)

 

Thanks - happy there is a reason for the min. and max. marks afterall - so at the max on a cold engine is fine then!

 

On a side note, always err on the side of caution, engines on ANY car hate to be over filled.

Just for clarity cars that have dry sump and oil tank is it ok if they carry a bit extra? Looking into the stainless tank it seems it does have space for expansion when the oil is hot? Or is it crucial to have it exact? I understand about cars with a sump.

 

I think you are overthinking this. The oil tank must have some free space as the hot oil returns to the tank from the engine. Do not overfill. As others have stated, keep the oil level between the min and max marks on the dipstick and worry about something else. (Smile)
