As long as you are not too close nor to far you are ok. Try to choose a location that has no wind or highway noise. Choose good mic and you are ok.

I've tried various locations, underneath by the exhaust tip, above the exhaust ob the bumper, in the boot, behind the driver's seat. My best result so far has been in the boot behind the carpeting.

I'd take a few test runs before you go and see/hear what you like the best.
Hate to go out filming for a day and then come back to horrible audio.

There is one owner that posted video at Thunderhill that I believe had decent audio. There are at least two threads I can remember where it was discussed. if I find then I'll edit them in this post.

That's the one. Just a bit of wind noise but doesn't detract enough to matter.

Assuming you'll be posting when finished - Yes?

Yes, That's what I'm planning to do. So far I've to place the the mic, next to left exhaust tip-results were good. then I tried on the license plate frame-not good, lot of wind noise. I'm gonna try right under hatch tail-will keep trying until I'm satisfied

waiting for other suggestions.

I have yet to purchase an external mic for my GoPro, but I was gonna give this a shot:

I know you said you already tried by the plate, but I feel like if you had it on the bumper to the side of the plate (not in the plate cutout), you'd have less wind noise.
