Vacuum Pump

Quick question about the vacuum pump on our cars: what is its function? Is it solely controlling the opening and closing of the exhaust valves, or does it control any other component on the car?
Mine is fried, and I want the valves open at all times, so I pulled the fuse... but should I replace it anyway?
Thanks!

If you're talking about the pump behind the right-rear wheel, that's only used for the exhaust bypass valves. It's a basic Ford pump if you ever want it working again. Dorman 904-214 is a cheap replacement.

I'd replace if you can and go with a CCCharger. Being able to close the valves when on the phone helps a lot.

New 2010 Rapide owner and loving it! Thanks for the added insight to the car and good to know there is a replacement pump out there should I need one. One of the first things I did was install the CCCharger switch. Agree it's a nice option. Just finished a 2000+ mile road trip through Shenadoah Mtns and the Outer Banks. It was good to have, although mine doesn't always switch back to ‘quiet’ mode right away.
