v12 r8 officially a supercar or not?
I guess supercars are reserved for only certain manufacturers?
What about Ford producing a supercar...the Ford GT. Same scenario

i wouldn't consider the Ford GT a supercar. it's a good car, a great car, but as lame as it sounds i do think their is a price consideration when categorizing supercars. it's basically 100% equal in performance to a C6 Z06. nobody considers the Z06 a supercar. cars are at a point today where they are so great in performance that it is a very fine line between what is considered a supercar, and what it's intentions are. the 997 TT bests many supercars, but it is not a supercar. same thing.
Slight thread hijack...
I've been wondering, aren't diesels inherently more durable/reliable than gas engines? Therefore I have to wonder if this car would set a new presedent in reliability. Seeing how dominating Audi was with this engine, one wonders how much "abuse" this car could take before a major fix. Especially given Audi's build quality.

Well part of the reason they are more reliable is they are heavier. This motor will be heavy but it will be STRONG. Its coming stock @ 2.6bar which is what? 14.7psi/bar so somewhere around 35psi? And it will probably handle even more than that. Problems will be can the trans take it, and heat.
Im not so sure supercar... we'll have to see performance when it comes out. But imo I think its an exotic since its the first of its kind. It has a wow factor now because of its motor. The whole world is taking notice of this car, it simply cannot be ignored.

I don't have anything against Audi itself. It's just that the car is much too refined to be a supercar.
Diesel? The torque numbers are impressive sure, but the car won't perform as if it has that much power nor be as fun.

If a diesel can't perform, how can they start putting them in world class race cars?
