Thinking about an S4 Avant

I am thinking about buying an '04-'05 S4 Avant, and I would like to hear from owners what I should be looking for as to problem areas that these cars may have.

Thanks......

-Horrible gas mileage... 13-14 city if you drive like a normal human being and not like a nun in a prius.

-Why do you need an Avant... not like it is going to make your life that much easier in regards to utility. The appearence/utility ratio is horrible.

-6 speed is generally stronger than the Auto transmission contrary to popular belief

-Repairs get pricey especially considering the 4.2L has to be taken out for selective repairs like hmm (cam position sensor...$70 part) look at your bill from the stealership after THAT one hahaha.

No, the gas mileage is not great, but I got about 16.5 mpg city in my S6 which has the same engine and is heavier, so I don't know about 13-14. And I DEFINITELY don't drive like a nun. Also, the 4.2L V8 has a pretty good track record. I know it was bulletproof for me. I think any engine on this forum is inexpensive to fix. If you were looking at the bi-turbo V6s, I know everyone would tell you to move on, but the B6 S4 avant is a cool car. Not sure about the comment about utility, either; an avant will always be more utilitarian than a sedan. Did you get punched by this car when you were a baby?

I have an 04 S4 Avant.
I am going to be honest the gas mileage is not great but I didn't buy the car for the mileage.
I have had no issues with the car at all. it runs great. I just make sure I do the maintenance.
Here is a picture of it.

Gorgeous. As far as utility is concerned, we have a HUUUGE dog that would never even fit in a smaller wagon (like an impreza). Were we to change current dog haulers towards something more sporty like an S4, we'd be forced to get an avant. I guess for many people the difference in utility might be more negligent, but it definitely is quite useful for others.

Giant golden retriever. He's like a bear. I don't know how we ended up with him...we thought he'd only be about 70-80lbs...not 120.

I have a 2005.5 Avant. I love it. A lot more comfortable than my wife's 3 series. Also, very versatile. Can haul my dog around in the back, but also have done track/DE events in it.

I have had a few minor electrical problems that were taken care of under warranty. Brake lights would stay on at night in cold weather.

I would definitely spend the money on an extended warranty. My warranty is up in 5k miles and I just started to look around for an extended.

Good luck

I currently drive a B5 S4 avant 6MT and sold my B6 S4 Avant 6MT. I really liked my B6 excluding the gas mileage. I always liked the B5 and wanted to save some $ so I found myself one. Prices on these are quite reasonable now, a lot more fun to modify, and better on gas(when not boosting that is).

Personally love avants and like them a lot more than the sedans. So much more useful especially for those who have kids, sports activities or running errands.
