why do u have to add OIL to the RS4 engine in a R8?

I heard that all R8 requires adding excess amount of oil ranging from 1 quart every 500 miles to 5 quartz every 5000 miles. Why does this happen? I thought its only for TURBOED engine?

Does this happen to all high performance cars, 911 TT, GTR? or all Audi?

Maybe has something to do with the R8's dry sump system (RS4 has a regular sump).

I just called a few audi service advisors and what they are telling me are not the same.

advisor 1 : this happens to R8 only. you will have to add oil every 1000 mile but you will NOT have to add excess oil after the break in period of 10000 miles, yes 10k miles for break in.

adviser 2: adding excess of oil into the engine happen to all Audi, even A4, A5, S5 R8. you will add oil every 3000 miles

can someone confirm on what they said? im confused about this.

Not all R8s use excessive oil, but some do. I have an '09 R8. I have added only 1.5 quarts in ~4100 miles. There is a great deal of speculation as to the differences of how the vehicles are driven during the break-in period.

I swapped my '09 dipstick "plug" (cover, basically) for the '08-style traditional dipstick so I could watch my oil level, and it's been pretty consistent, I haven't had to add any oil and I turned 20k miles this month (oil has been changed 3 times, presently using Mobil1 0w40).

On my old Supra, even after a full engine build, it burned oil with heavy boosting. I think this is just the nature of turbo cars, but obviously irrelevant to the R8.

your wasting your time calling the dealer and asking them any technical questions. I called to ask them the offset (wheels) on an Audi B8 A4 my friend bought and no one knew..(go figure).. If they cant find out something as simple as Wheel Offsets goodluck on getting one straight answer from them about something as complicated as what your asking..Sorry dont mean to sound like im venting but Audi Service advisers **** me off...lol

My buddy had an RS4 and had to add oil all the time. He kept a quart in the trunk at all times.

I have an '04 S4 and it uses 1 quart every 1000 miles and that has been considered normal from the same topic on other forums.

you guys should send your oil to blackstone for analysis.
FSI motors are known for carbon build up issues and also "stock" oil is not up to task .

My R8 has used ~1.5 quarts in 4000 miles. My 04 A8L has only used 1 additional quart in ~127,000 miles. Same engine, difference configuration and oil system.

I read somewhere that the Audi FSI engines prone for this.

1. The crankcase vents are plumbed back into the intake manifold and that causes poor valve seal and carbon buildup.

FSI just use more oil than than other engines. I think the new Porsche PDK Carrera has the same problem with oil consumption.
