will there be a new RS4?

if so what engine will it get? Just drove a new S4 and it felt every bit as powerful as a RS4 I drove a while back. Will it get a tuned version of the supercharged v6 or retain the 4.2L v8? tks

There will be an RS5 released with an updated/tweaked version of the RS4/R8 V8 power plant. A rumored 450hp. No mention of a new RS4. Also, many, and I do mean many RS4s all over the world are suffering from carbon buildup do to an insufficient PCV system and exhaust gas recirculation. SO, unless you drove an RS4 with less than 1K miles on the clock, you probably have not felt the real power.
As far as most Audi enthusiasts know, the carbon issue is affecting all Audi direct injection engines. It's been a huge topic on the Audi sites for some time now.

Interesting news, what is Audi and owners doing to correct the problem?

If the problem causes a permanent code, the dealer will clean/replace the intake manifold and clean the intake valves. Obviously the problem will come back again.
Most owners have done the cleaning themselves or have contracted a shop to do the work. Lots of manual labor, and quite a bit out of pocket if a shop does it. Some owners have installed catch cans but that will not completely solve the problem.
With your IS-f, you probably don't have to worry since Lexus injects fuel into the manifold to clean the valves.

Interesting, I wonder if my B7 S4 had problems......I didn't notice anything but I only put 24,000 miles on it before trading it in!

wouldn't share same problems, as b6/b7 s4 are not FSI motors...

Your B7 was standard port fuel injection. This only affects direct injection Audi engines.

I see. interesting. therefore would that imply that the more expensive r8 will also get the rumored 450hp? cant imagine an rs5 costing say 70-80USD will have more hp than the 120USD r8.

The rs4 i drove was used and had >1k miles. As i recall it didnt feel any more powerful than my 02 m5.

RS4 will be back, but with what engine? makes no sense to shove the V 10 into the A4 chasis, when it's already in the S6/S8/R8 and you can't get any more power out of the 3.0 T found in the A6 and S4. Good things come to those who wait, and I have a feeling Audi is working on a new engine!

There is no word of a rs4 replacement as of now.

What makes you think they can't get any more power out of the s4's new supercharged engine?? They already have, and they were just messing around:

http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2009/05...ded-408hp.html

"Audi has prepared a high-performance customized variant of its new compact SUV, the Q5, equipped with a retuned version of the S4's 3.0-liter V6 TFSI producing an output of 408HP and a maximum torque figure of 500Nm or 369lb-ft, up from the standard engine's 333HP and 440Nm. The result is a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time of just 4.4 seconds while the SUVs top speed is electronically governed at 250 km/h or 155 mph."

My guess is that Audi will continue to use more efficient/smaller engines, with a higher emphasis on weight reduction, much like they did in their A5 lightweight concept.

Then what is the point of buying the RS4, when all you have to do is tune and tweak the S4 for similiar numbers? If there is room in the 3.0 for more power so be it. Be that as it may, you can't compete against yourself, it's bad business and it's the reason why Porsche doesn't make the cayman any more powerful because it would cut into 911 sales because it's balance and all around driving experience. There is a reason why people stepped up into the RS4 from the S4 because no matter what you did as far as tune, exhaust intake etc. you could never get close to the RS4's performance. If the b8 S4 can be tuned to match the power of the new RS4, why bother jumping up in class for significantly more money?

time will tell...... but if I was a betting man, I would predict an entirely new powerplant for the new RS4

What RS4 are you referring to? There is no new b8 RS4 on tap yet...just an RS5 that's been 'nearing an unveiling sometime soon' for way too long.

For argument's sake, if there was a new RS4 on its way, there is always room. For starters, just because you can tweak engines to be similar in terms of power, doesn't mean they deliver the same driving experience. A tuned BMW 335 for example will have a lot more torque and thus a different experience than that in the m3 with its high-revving v8. Beyond that, cars like the M3 and RS4 will likely upgraded suspensions, brakes, etc... I'm sure you can relate: I'm sure you wouldn't be as happy with a tuned IS350; it wouldn't have the same sound and muscular look as your ride.

Additionally, a tuned car would obviously void your warranty (although thats never stopped any of us ), which some people would not be content with; thus creating a market for the other car.

Good points, and you might be right. Wouldn't it make sense for Audi to develop a twin turbo V8 like BMW? Now that sounds nice........
