1981 Rally Ur Quattro
1981 Rally Ur Quattro
Hello Everyone,
I figured it was time to start a project thread here. This section has a ton of new Audi's which are all incredible, but they wouldn't be what they are if it wasn't for the Original Quattro. For those of you who don't know the history of these cars with rallying and performance, you are in for a real treat!
A little history taken from wikipedia:
"The Audi Quattro was the first rally car to take advantage of the then-recently changed rules which allowed the use of four-wheel drive in competition racing. It won competition after competition for the next two years.[1] To commemorate the success of the original vehicle, all subsequent Audis with their trademark quattro four-wheel-drive system were badged "quattro" with a lower case "q" and in a distinct typeface which has remained almost entirely unchanged since its inception. The original car with the upper case "Q" in the Quattro name is a collector's piece."
The US only had the quattro from 1983-1985. My car is a 1981 Euro spec Ur Quattro that was imported to the US in 1981. It's possibly one of the first UrQ's in the US! The car came with an extensive service history with receipts dating back to 1983.
Ithas been modified over its lifetime and even ice raced for a short period. In the early 90's it was chipped, had gauges and a rollbar added.
Later on one of the owners added a few rally parts to it.
My plans for the car are to turn it into a rally tribute to the 1981 San Remo Rally winning Quattro, IN-NL 88, piloted by Michele Mouton and Fabrizia Pons.
Since I bought it I've:
Rewired the headlights with relays
Patched a big rust hole in the trunk
Rebuilt the shifter and added an 034 short shift kit
Summer wheels R8 Ronals with BFG tires
Recaro Profi Seats
Refinished the exhaust
Rally spec a1 grill
986 Porsche front brake upgrade
S4 rear brake upgrade
I have on order a bunch of rally parts coming from the UK. New front and rear bumpers, fog light brackets, and rear oil cooler.
I'll have more updates when I can, in the meantime here are some pics.

Recaros are in

My odometer stopped working so I took apart the cluster to find a broken gear. With a little super glue and some retaining clips my odometer is working fine again.

Boxster brakes

Some classic rally shots

Awesome car and I like the looks ( including the light tree) !! Used to have Morris Cooper S (997 cc) rally version with plastic side windows, no heater, Speedwell exhaust etc. Great fun!!

limeylight- I've followed your car on the other forums for a while now. Beautiful!
I was having a rust spot fixed at IAG's body shop. I know them from back in my Subaru days. Turns out one of the guys who works there had some pictures of my car from back when it was for sale!
Good news and bad news... Good news is the new bumpers and other rally stuff will be here this week.
Bad news is the brake proportioning valve is leaking profusely so I haven't been able to drive it for quite some time now. I'm glad it happened when it was already up on jack stands and not while driving down the road!

Congratulations on a great car Cameron. I know this car and it's two previous owners very well. In fact, I bought my URQ from the previous previous owner when he owned TWO quattros. The one I bought is a pristine 85 in very original condition but I sometime wish I had bought this one as it is one you can drive properly if you know what I mean. Mine is too nice to thrash unfortunately but I love it anyway.

Coincidentally I was in Maryland a few weeks ago visiting the Porsche Club HQ and some of our dealers. I didn't know it at the time but I was at IAG and saw a picture of your car on their website after I got home. Small world isn't it?
Looking forward to seeing how this project develops. Let me know if you need any help with parts especially wheels.
Good luck.

Not much has been going on lately, Just cleaning things up a bit. I went to a car show this past weekend. Lost 5th and Reverse on the way there. A new shifter bushing is on the way.
Here are some pictures from the meet. I didn't take these so I can't take credit for them.
