This car is the result of a dinner conversation discussing the numerous Shelby GT350s, XKEs, 356s etc that were totalled in the late 1960s and 70s because of their lower value-to-repair cost ratio. Most were rebuildable and would be saved today because of their current values and unfortunately there wasn’t the foresight to have saved them. So many of today’s rare cars that are destined to be future classics simply are being tossed by insurance companies because of the lower current value vs. high repair costs. Or they're not being properly restored. Being a long time Vintage Automobile enthusiast I have always found it hard to not save the great cars.
Such was the case with this low mileage Silver 2004 996 GT3 that had extensive panel damage. Even though nearly every body panel below the window line had damage the airbags were not deployed. [no frame damage/ accidents reported See "Autocheck" on current ebay listing # 330527623918] Here was a one owner car that was sold and damaged within a month of a new [2nd] owners purchase. We were aware that only 750 996 GT3s were sold in the U.S. A full tear down removing any damaged parts was completed. What remained was a structurally sound GT3. Damage was superficial with the exception of damage extending to the front rightside inner fender. The decision was made to save this rare GT3 and complete a proper build of the highest standards as a 997 GT3RS for my personal automobile. We proceeded to remove everything from the car including the interior yielding only the shell. Only new Porsche factory parts were used to correct 997 detail throughout the exterior. [even 997 door handles were used] This was not a simple build and it was quite costly. The car has been completed for some time and has proven itself via many trips to and from Northern/ Southern California. At Porsche events many are puzzled to see a 996 interior.
We love this car and the fact that this Porsche continues to provide daily enjoyment.
The only item on the car that varies from stock 997RS items are the rocker panels. These are one piece rockers we've seen on the competition cars. These were available to us and thought it would be unique.
The car retains all of its original mechanics specific to the 996 GT3 which includes the two-stage resonance intake system, and GT3 uprated dry-sump oiling system. 380 horsepower at 7,400 rpm, 285 pound-feet of torque at 5,000, and an 8,200-rpm redline. The exhaust has been upgraded to the low restrictive center exit RS type exhaust.
Retains the GT3 transmission with its shorter (numerically higher) fifth- and sixth-gear ratios. Note: the top four gears in the GT3 were steel synchronizers [rather than brass in other 996s] for increased durability.
Suspension has not been altered in any way as it is unique to the GT3 where Porsche replaced the typical rubber strut-top bearings with steel ***** to reduce deflection under high cornering loads. GT3s have fully adjustable camber, ride height, and antiroll bars. Brakes are the larger GT3 13.8-inch diameter [front] and 13-inch [rear] six-piston calipers. Note: Not Ceramic Composite.
Exterior Upgrades include 997 GT3RS Rear fenders, Rear Bumper, Rocker panels, Engine lid with Carbon fiber RS wing, RS front air dam with RS lip, Mirrors, Hood, 997 door handles, 997 front bumper, fenders, 997 front /rear lights, turn signals, third light, exhaust, graphics, GT3 wheels with "RS" center caps.
We also made various changes to the interior in the RS spirit. These changes include RS door jamb plates, 996 sport seats with contrasting orange stitching and Alcantera inserts, Alcantera steering wheel, Alcantera headliner, Carbon fiber hand brake handle and gear shift ****, Factory OE Tequipment bar, Passenger side Fire Extinguisher mount, CD, Climate Control, retains all correct GT3 gauges [8200 rpm redline]
The car has never been raced. Retains under 30K original miles. Drives perfectly. Alignment is absolutely spot on. Always kept in a climate controlled garage.
Since the build it has been driven regularly. Such is evident by the few minor rock chips that exist on the lower front [bumper]. Airbag light came on once and was turned off by Porsche mechanic/shop. Recently while driving to Northern California it came on. Evaluation of such with last service [by porsche specialists] appears that a belt retract is malfunctioning and needs replacement. Could be fault of seat removal for roll bar installation.
There is a small chip on the rear bumper below the left guard approximately 1/8 inch that has been touched up.
Typical of every GT3 I've seen, the front lower air dam has some scrape marks on the bottom side.
Small "bump" on rubber on driverside door. Should be removed and replaced/corrected.
Thats the list of flaws.
Also of note is that there has never been an issue to fully insure this Porsche by our insurance company. They inspected the car and agreed to insure it at stated value without question on the spot.
Heres a GT3 that has the looks of the 997RS and can be used daily.
Reason for sale is that we retain numerous autos. We are relocating this spring and have limited the number of autos that will be going with us or put into storage. We are hoping that this GT3 is bought by someone that will enjoy and preserve it. We prefer to sell off Ebay to Porsche enthusiast. Email for more specifics and or photos.
