Re-painted 997

Hello - new to forum. I would appreciate some thoughts / advice, please. Looking to get back into owning a 911. Been targeting some 997.1 cars. Found one teatra fits the bill, EXCEPT, second owner had the car wrapped for one year, some paint was damages on removal, car was repainted in original white color. Car was trade-in and is now sitting on non-Porsche dealership lot. They know very, very little about these cars, and haven’t been able to sell at their KBB fair value price. I assume this is because a finicky Porsche enthusiast won’t go near a repainted car. Car is more than I wanted to spend, but it has low miles (31k), sound and drives really well. I know that I can get a deep discount - they want to move the car big time. I’m struggling with whether to go all out and get this car at far below market value. I plan to keep the car remainder of my life (I’m 60 yo, freshly retired) and would be OK to get into this car knowing the paint issue, IF I could purchase it well below a “reasonable” price (currently they want $43 K). Any thoughts ? Suggestions ? Of course, I would get a PPI and oil change to verify mechanical side (and eliminate any IMS angst). Thanks in advance.

First off, was the paint job done right where you won't have regrets every time you look at it? Other than that, if you plan on keeping it for life, the PPI checks out and you get a robust discount relative to KBB retail value, why not. Sounds like a great opportunity to get the car you want at a deep discount with no worries about resale value. At least the car wasn't repainted due to an accident so it should have a clean carfax (in case you're forced to sell for whatever reason) but a repainted car will take a hit on value no matter what the reason so I'd make sure the price is right. .

+1 on sandwedge's comments.

If the car is non metallic, which the Porsche white colors are, then matching the paint should not have been to tough. If you're keeping it forever then any reduced value from a repaint also shouldn't matter to you. The price you listed is on the higher side for a 997.1 with paint issues though. If yiu can get it for mid to high 30s, I'd say it's a good deal.

Thank you for your thoughts. It is a strange circumstances, to say the least. Paint job looks OK to me (will take much closer look again). The unrealistic asking price is over my budget, but if I could get price down, I could live with the known issue. I think the other issue is the low miles - I know, I know, some would say that isn’t good, but if PPI checks out, then all the better.

Steph1 - the car is 2007.

again, thanks for input. I really needed some confirmation now, so if it did come down to purchase I wouldn’t be second-guessing myself.

AS an adjuster/Estimator at a Collision Repair Shop, I will be the first to say WHITE is the biggest pain in the *** to match. There are literally 100's of whites. Even if they used the EXACT mix, a different pressure in a gun, or different distance from the spray gun to the car, the same solid white will change many times. If YOU are happy with the match, then that's all that matters. Be sure to look at it in the direct sun, that will show the true colors.

I agree with Petza. If I was in your position with that car and no other issues but the paint job I would like to be somewhere in the $35,000 zone. Maybe a bit higher because of the low miles.

Maybe I misunderstood but I got the impression that the entire car was repainted so no matching issue. If that's the case, would it matter as long as it was a first rate paint job? Maybe they skipped the bottom of the front hood, door sills and anything inside the engine compartment. Just wonder how visible that would be every time you opened the door to get in the car. Btw....I've heard the same thing about white. Nearly impossible to match perfectly.

For a 2007, I totally agree with $35G being fair if all else passes with flying colors.

If I were you I would pass and look for a clean 981 Boxster or Cayman S - best Porsche you can buy for the money. Reliable, screaming flat 6, insane sound with the PSE (Porsche sport ezhaust) - I’ve had three and I can safely tell you that my current one (981 Boxster GTS) is just as much fun as my weekend car (Huraxan Performante) and maybe even more fun before I worry less 😊
