Repaint effect on value

I'm looking at a 996tt that was repainted by the current owner (the second owner) due to paint damage during transport. Carfax is clean....

So, there is some 'diminished value' but how much? I plan on keeping the car about four years.

Some cosmetic issued identified via the PPI. Mechanicals are solid.

Cars are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them. For me personally, I wouldn't let something like that cause me to lower the value of my car if I was selling, and I wouldn't expect an owner to lower a price for it if I was buying. Now if there was an accident involved, that is a different story.

Are you sure it wasn't in an accident? Just because carfax is clean doesn't mean jack.

Thanks for the perspective.

Agree re Carfax...

Owner didn't disclose the repaint prior the PPI and me asking about it. The shop performing the PPI (where is car is serviced) identified the repaint but sees no indications of an accident.

Wholly buyer dependent. I wouldn't buy a P car that I knew had been painted unless I was looking for a track beater or work car, the the price would have to be such that I wouldn't even care if it had a hood, door or fender off another car. With a repaint I always expect the worst. Paint damage in transit, could be anything from a scrape along one side to falling off the truck. Even if you don't care most people buying don't want any paint work at all, it could hurt you when you sell. Selling several P cars over the years, "any paint work" is generally the fist question buyers ask.

I'd be more concerned about the buyer not disclosing the paintwork. What else is he not telling you?

bottom line is how's the paint job? if it's perfect i don't mind in fact it will add to the value of the car, accident it's a different story.

I wouldn't think much of it if the PO has pictures of damage and the work was done by a Porsche certified repair place.

I had a small incident a year ago, and had to have a front quarter panel replaced. It was all done by Jim Ellis in Atlanta, I took many pictures of the damage, and I would hope that a future buyer would realize that car has NOTHING wrong.

This. If it was truly minor, there's shouldn't have been any harm in mentioning it.

Also this. If it was minor, ask for pics of it and ask where it was repaired. If he doesn't have pics, call up the place where it was repaired and ask.

I'm in Atlanta as well. I have some tiny road rock chips up front and I'm thinking about just having the hood and front bumper repainted. I think I'll take it to this auto body shop off of Cobb Parkway near Kennesaw. I'm not going to sweat any value hit. I won't be selling my 996TT cab any time soon and will most likely coilsovers and new wheels to liven/renew the look.

nyc996x50 is infamous around these parts
I had my whole car resprayed. I have no intention of selling my car. If I did, I have a thread in rennlist with pictures of my car taken apart and I have proof my car has no structural damage.
http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...0+build+thread

If there's pictures of the respray, I would consider the car. How much the car is worth depends on how good the paint job is and how the panel gaps are. Keep in mind the car has to be taken apart for a proper respray.
