Wtb: 01+ 996
Wtb: 01+ 996
I have been lurking around this section for a while now looking for an 01+ with under 70k on the odo but every time I think I found one it has the TT tag and a price to match. The majority of the cars on this forum would sooner find their way onto my wall than in my driveway but maybe someone out there can help a poor sucker for Porsche.
I'm working on a relatively miniscule budget of around $35k. The car I see when I close my eyes and let my bank account laugh at me is an 02 black/black 6spd, 40-60k mi, no other options (keep the price down). In reality though I'll be ok with any darker color (silver ok too) as long as it's a black or gray interior and NOT tiptronic or a cabriolet. I have seen a surprising number of 01 and a few 02 that alllmooosst fit the bill.
I'll take care of everything as far as shipping and such...even rub your feet if you find me one! haha.
So there it is. If my services are worth anything to anyone here, I have 14 years of computer experience and can get you 5% off replacement Porsche parts. Thanks and here's to wishful thinking!

Keep watching cars.com, AutoTrader.com, eBay and sites like this. I've seen plenty of 996's go for <$40k (sadly). A quick search on Cars.com showed 55 cars within 500 miles of me that are 1999+ and =<$35,000.
My best advice about buying a car like a Porsche, is:
1) you also need to have the funds to keep it up. P-cars get a bad rap from people who buy 944's, 928's or sometimes older 911's because of the low price of admission and don't invest in upkeep. Next thing they know, it breaks and needs $5k or more to put it back on the road.
2) waiting a little longer and spending a little more upfront to get the right car will pay you back 10x in maintenance & repair.
Happy Hunting.

I'm stuck with the 01+ because that's a stipulation of my funding. I could go elsewhere but aside from that (and being private party) the terms are fantastic so I'd like to take advantage of it if possible.
I'm not too concerned with upkeep. I work at a large Porsche parts and restoration shop and my best friend is the service manager. He has already agreed to free labor for life and my parts are wholesale. A clutch, installed, is $300. That's almost cheaper than if I went with an Isuzu! haha.
I appreciate the advice, and you're 100% right too. Some of the cars that come through for seemingly simple problems go away with a few K in bills. Like the saying goes, if your Porsche isn't leaking oil...check your oil.

Define "a bit"
Sadly, shy of selling toes (anyone in the market?!) 35k is about my cap. Of course if we're talking 'a bit' as in 5k is 'a lot' I can deal with the wifey yelling at me for a while longer. lol
Sorry to be a penny pincher here. My life is surrounded with them, my job depends on knowing them. Of the cars avail the 996 is the clear choice and within that span an 02 is prime; many improvements. Of course that's right on the razors edge of affordable for me. I had a 914 for a while but didn't like being passed by a Geo merging on the highway
My funding is for 30days though so PM me if you're able to work with me. Thanks!

i'm considering putting my 01 996 up on the market??? I was thinking about asking exactly $35k for it. It's a cab though??? and it has 74k miles, but i put 12k on it this summer driving from california to michigan and driving back and forth to work (60 miles each way). Basically these were REALLLLLLY easy miles for the car. There are some mods on the car too. PM me or email if your interested (drjustinrichardson@hotmail.com).
Oh yeah, i JUST (200 miles) had the front hood/bumper/fenders re-painted to take out the stone chips...so basically it looks brand new???

Finding a nice car at, or below wholesale is a tough one. I suggest working with a broker that has ties to leasing companies. As I checked into some out here on the west coast, and they are around, but as always it CAN be a gamble. But what is not with any used car.
Cheers

Very true. Between 20 or so websites I have searched I have found about half a dozen 02's with under 70 for that price and dozen or so 01's. Almost all of them are at dealers and my funding is for private party. However, if the dealer has it at that price it means someone sold it to them (trade-in probably) for less. My luck will be in finding that person before they trade it for 30 and offer 35. Big hope, but it's worth a try.
Jurichar - Thanks for the offer, however as per the stipulations of my funding it *must* have under 70k.

I found many 1999-2000's in the 27-30k range, 2001's in the 30k+ range, as I'm sure you have as well.
My broker showed me prices of "end of lease" cars, but 2001's were in the $29-34k range, and that was in last September. But always a gamble. As I've leased cars before, and well sometimes they are ridin hard, and some not, it's just hard to tell, as leasing companies do not disclose contact information pertaining to previous owners.
FYI...I bought a 1999 with a new 2001 crate motor, dealer installed, with 1+ year full warranty for less than $25k, in fact my car had $20k invested 8 months prior to my purchase at the dealer that first sold my car when new.
So good deals are out there.
Best of luck
Mark

niiice, that's a heck of a deal. Closest I found was a '99 with a 2,000mi motor for around $30k. I'll see if I can find any of the end of lease deals. If you stumble across any I'd be very grateful for info. Thanks!

Keep looking, I picked up an 01 with 77k, 18 in sport wheels, B&M SSK, H&R sport springs, Sport exhaust, new tires and fresh tune up for 27 K, have since put on 7 k trouble free miles. Bring cash and do not be afraid to low ball them, be quick, spring is coming and it is not a good time to get a deal on a P car. Look in all the internet sites and be prepared to move at a moments notice.
Good luck;
You will ask yoursell why you waited so long to get one.
I did

J Greer is correct.
Spring is coming, and prices will not be going down. As you know the 996 is one of the best Porsche values out there today. I know, my 1999 C2 is Porsche #5 for me.
What is far more important than getting the screaming deal is buying a car that will not barf on you.
My new engine was roughly $12k installed in May of last year.
I love getting the best deals in business, as I have worked as a Sales Manager in Commercial Equipment Finance for years and done very well!
But when it was time to buy a nice ride, I also tempered my desire for the best smoking deal with the common sense logic of spending enough so I do not have to pull out the gold card at the dealership right away.
Many times the price price is not the best deal.....
I'll keep my eyes peeled for deals out here on the west coast.
Cheers
