tire size for 20" mulliners for gt

I have a set of 20" mulliners, with no tires.

I have a set of old tires from my previous car that are almost new
255/40/20 would these work?

The original tire calls for a 275/35/20

Anybody ever run any size different than the original, I dont mind speedo being a bit off.

Doubt it, you've got a width difference to start with, as well as the aspect ratio which as you correctly guess will change your indicated speed.

Tyres would fit and would be less bulbous, more of a stretched fit but not in a ridiculous way, the wall would sit back in to the centre of the wheel by 10mm and the speedo will read minutely fast:

@ 30 MPH indicated, Actual will be 30.49 MPH.

@ 55 MPH indicated, Actual will be 55.9 MPH.

@ 65 MPH indicated, Actual will be 66 MPH.

@ 70 MPH indicated, Actual will be 71.1 MPH.

Not sure what the handling characteristics would be like but slightly firmer ride with less tyre roll.

Your reply worries me. Have you any evidence to back it up, ie, know anyone who has done this? The fit will give a lot of gap on a precision rim.

Worries you? why is that then? all i have done is stated fact.

I did say I was not sure about how the handling of the car would change so not given any false information there.

I am currently using a very different profile of tyre and it has changed the feel of the car completely but just the way i wanted it to, I have lost some of the comfort due to the firmer ride.

I am slightly confused as to what you mean by "gap" and "precision rim"?

I wanted to protect the rim, that's the main concern
I even found a pic of 265/40/20 being run all around

I can't tell but it sorta looks too thick

I don't care about speedo differences

Just concerned that the rim width range may not be enough. Perhaps someone with more knowledge on this can correct me.

I see, so what you are saying here is you have little or no knowledge of wheel and tyre fitments, no problem, i do not blame you for not trusting my comments.

I have seen far too much bull on forums to even consider trusting the information.

On a 9" rim you can go to as little as a 235 or 245, it will look fairly stretched and the rim will protrude.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge can confirm my comments.

I don't get what you are getting at? The OP wanted to know if they will fit, and they will.

The perfect width or middle range for a 9" rim is a 255 which the OP has.

A 235 or 245 will also fit fine but visually looked more stretched also a 265 and 275 will fit but will look bulbous. :-)

Phatz,

If the GT in the picture is running 265/40/20's all round then it will be 10 mm higher off the ground over your standard 275 due to it being 10 mm thicker, so you are correct in what you say.

This would have an effect on handling as the COG will be higher up.
