Hi all, new Bentley owner here

Hi all,

I'm from Malaysia and I have bought a used 2007 Continental GT and this is my first British made, previously owned Volvo, Merc, BMW and Porsche. I must say that this British Beauty is awesome.

I have a few issues here and is hoping that forummers here can shed some light as the parts are sold very expensive here due to conversion rate. A new Continental GT is sold at $500,000 due to conversion rate and taxes. Luckily car importers are able to bring in used units from UK.

1) I'm currently on Ron97. Can i run on Ron 95 although the spec says it's alright? Anyone encounter problems running on Ron95 or lower. We only have 95 and 97 here and the price difference for 95 and 97 is about 40%.

2) My soft close door is not working on driver's side. The door will shut but it's just the soft close function is not working. Might be the sensor or lock assembly problem right? Any other possible cause?

3) I notice there's a constant "Ngeeee" sound ( A sound similar to aircraft taking off) from the left side of the car whenever i accelerate. When i let go off the pedal the sound is gone. However, sometimes the sound appears on idling too. But everytime when i start the engine the sound wouldnt appear, it will appear once i started accelerating.
At first i thought it was the air suspension's compressor constantly pumping air into the suspension due to leakage but the air suspensions are fine after inspection.
There isn't any fault code as well when i sent for diagnosis.

Thanks in advance for all the advices..

Welcome to the forum I hope you get your issues worked out. I have no advice for you sorry. Your fuel ratings are different than we have in the US but i tell you i run 93 octane all the time no exceptions.

1) USA (AKI/PON) --- Europe (RON)

87 = 91
89 = 93
91 = 95
93 = 98

So 95 may be ok. It does seem the car really does like/prefer higher octane fuel though.

2) Soft close door is a dealer repair or good independent. Easy fix.

3) As for the "Ngeeee" sound, without being there it is hard to tell. Yet if no error codes and a Bentley mechanic says it is ok, then you should be fine. There are interesting 'noises' the Bentley makes unlike others cars. The air suspension is of course one of them.

I have been threatening the idea of a mixed tank just to see if I could really notice the difference. I hope I don't. I'd hate to get an expensive addiction to race gas.

Thanks for all the advices and replies.. I think i'll stick to RON97 for time being since most of the Bentley owners are using higher octane, for a peace of mind atleast.

My friend is running Ron95 in his Audi S5 2008 4.2l V8 with no problem at all that is why i was considering Ron95.

As Steven and I are bantering and goading one another, in good fun the issue is two fold. 1. Are you getting all the capacity out of your car? and 2. Over the long run will you pay a higher price for running the car as it was not designed to be operated?

Enjoythemusic knows darn good and well i will have to try the race gas and then will be ruined by it.

I dont mean to hijack the topic, but I used race gas at one of the recent track events (I think it was Sunoco 100) and did not feel any significant difference. Speaking with a few people at the track, they mentioned that the car's computer systems should be configured to to take full advantage of fuels with higher octane number than 93, otherwise there is very little benefit.

You want to go as low as the ecu will compensate for and stay at that octane level, typically it is 91 and less will have the car pull timing and reduce power. Going more than whatever level is factory tuned for will in almost every case just be wasted. The computer is only looking for "am i detonating, if so pull timing" not "add timing untill my knock sensor starts hitting"

I ran 91 90% of the time and when it had a tank of 89 I didnt notice anything on WOT.

I did do a mixed tank of 2/3 93 octane and 1/3 110 octane and did not see a noticeable difference. My ecu is set for 93.

about #3, I'm not sure if we are hearing the same sound but I also hear some "whistling" sound when I accelerate. I'm not sure if it the turbo spinning sound...
