House Battery Replacement DIY 2006-2012(?) Continental

Alright, I've been on the forum longer than I have had the account, so I've seen that some people have had difficulty with their "House" (The left side US driver) battery installation. Likely due to the mess of a connector on the positive side.

First, some quick myths.

No, you do not need to reset your radio

Yes, the suspension light will go out after being driven. A scanner is not required.

Yes, the traction control light will go out after being driven. A scanner is not required either.

Yes, the date and time will need to be set. Go to "Set Up" on the center console, then "More options", then you will see Time, and Date underneath it.

Tools required:

1/4" ratchet

10MM

13MM

Small hammer or something else to seat the battery connector

A H8 sized battery is required. I bought mine from Walmart, it is a Everstart H8 for $118.00 and a 3 year replacement warranty. You DO NOT need a fancy battery from a fancy manufacturer such as Optima, Deka, or Duralast Platinum.

It is very easy, the most difficult part is lifting the old battery out, and putting the new one in. It's a hefty beast of a battery.

First step: Open the boot and locate the panel on the left, remove said panel.

Second step: Use a 10MM socket to disconnect the black negative (Earth) terminal. Set it beside somewhere. It is the terminal closest to you. The left side of the battery.

Third step: Use a 13MM socket to remove the positive terminal. It is the large nut similar to the negative. Lift off the entire black block and set aside.

NOTE: If you can not move the block far, some cars have another wire leading to ___. See photo, remove this to get some more room to get the battery out.

Now, there is a small bolt (13mm) on the right side (farther away from you) of the battery, this is the hold down. Unbolt this, and set the bolt aside. The bracket stays in, but you should now be able to move the battery away from you towards the front of the car.

Here's the difficult part..lifting this behemoth of a battery!

If you have a white box above the battery and below the black fuse block, pull towards you and it should pop out, set it aside.

Step Four: Lift up the battery a tad so it is above the ledge of the battery box, lift the battery out of the car being careful to not touch ANY terminals/wires to the car. It may be good to put some electrical tape or a rag around the wires you disconnect. I'd highly recommend doing that.

After the old battery is out, it is all the opposite.

Step Five: Replace a new battery into the old's place. Connect the positive wire back to the block, and then the positive block (Opposite of third step) to the battery. Tighten until it no longer moves, just finger tight and then a half turn should suffice.

Step Six: Go ahead and connect the earth negative terminal in the same fashion.

Step Seven: If applicable, put the white box into it's place.

Go ahead and start the car before packing up. Make sure it starts with either only turning the key to the right (not turning it to the left, then right), or using the push button.

THE CAR WILL HAVE WARNING LIGHTS

To clear;
Drive it around the block and all of the lights should turn off. The tire pressure light MAY need around 2-3 miles to recalibrate itself. At least that's how my 2007 FS acted.

Positive terminal

The bolt in the middle of the photo is the hold down.

Hope this helps someone, I'm not too terribly good as a teacher, so I hope the instructions are clear enough. Feel free to ask any questions.
