High pitched tone from shifter?

My old ears have never heard this and still can't (and neither can my wife) but my grandson's 15 year old ears are quite sharp and while riding in the back seat while driving his dad to the airport, he said he could hear a high pitched whistle or tone coming from the front of the cabin. On our way home, now with him riding in the front, he investigated further and determined that the sound emanates from under the shift bezel after using a towel to block and unblock suspected sources. When stopped at a light he can still hear it but it sounds "staticy." As soon as we start moving he reports that the tone goes solid again. Since I can't hear it this isn't something that bothers me but I'm curious as to what might cause it. I suspect that most of us here have lost at least some of our high frequency hearing but any ideas would be interesting. I have tinnitus so I hear a high pitched screeching 24/7 anyway .
