Gas Cap Tether Replacement

When I filled up the tank yesterday the gas cap tether broke. It was brittle after 12 years so not unexpected. I didn't relish spending $78+ for a new gas cap so did a little search and came across this site which sells a replacement tether for $15.99 delivered or, if you have a 3D printer, you can download the file for 99 cents and print your own. I ordered today and will post the result when I receive it.

Sorry, I forgot to follow up. The first one he sent was too tight so he sent two more versions - a mama bear and a papa bear. The biggest one worked but expanded and was too loose. The middle one is OK if you hold it with one hand while unscrewing the cap with the other. I'm not really happy with it. I may try the Audi part at Auto Zone.

Looks like he may have dropped the item from his catalog - maybe because mine didn't work out so well.

I bought the Audi gas cap tether from the link above. It did not fit. Different diameter and ring style that goes on the cap.

When mine broke, made a replacement out of stainless "guy" wire.

The attached eBay offering is a similar configuration of the tether itself. This could probably be a good replacement? Be careful taking the tethering ring off the gas cap to install the tether.

I have only seen the proper tether for sale when it is connected to the cap. When I saw that the Audi ring would not work, I tried to get the cord off to see if I could attach the new cord. The Bentley ring was old and brittle, so it snapped as I was trying to get the broken cord out of it.

I might make a mold of the ring and try to cast a new one in a durable plastic. This would be pretty far in the future since I have a lot of other projects in the works. I will post here if and when I get to it, or if I find a better solution.

My gas cap tether was broken when I purchased the car, but I plan on just fixing it myself in this manner:

It's on my Winter-To-Do-list, now that I have taken a break from fixing small things on the Bentley and just enjoyed the ride during the warmer months.

Do we know the part number of the Audi replacement? I could do the heat-shrink thing, but my cap is pretty old and worn, wouldn't hurt to buy a new one. I like the jeweled ones, but I don't like them $400 worth.

I found a comparable Audi part a long time ago, but I lost track of it.

I know this isn't elegant but I had the cord handy and it was two quick holes with a small drill. A waxed shoe lace would do nicely.
