Trunk does not open

Gremlins keep on haunting me,
This time I cannot open my trunk again. Last time, I had problems which were solved because I jacked up the car rear on one side, tried, then tried on the other side and finally trunk released. Then of course, I realigned it.
This time it started again, tried all options and I finally broke the manual release trying.
Inside the trunk, I know where the main opening mechanism is and want to try surgically drill a hole through the lining exposing it. I was going to use a large hole drill and then preserve the "plug" so it is invisible while reassembling. My question is exactly where to drill to expose enough to expose the locking mechanism to get access?
Then, I will send my petite wife through the middle back seat opening to open the trunk LoL.....
At least, this is my plan?
