Oil filter adapter replacement

On my 2006 GT, due to a leak in the line out banjo bolt on the oil filter housing, i tried to adjust/tighten. The threads on the inside of housing got stripped out (partially based on the threads that came out with bolt) - bummer - looks like the only way to remove bolts on part is to remove the alternator first AND that means - the front end has to come off since i am not a shop. I will not pay $1,700 for a new housing w/cooler so either machine new threads and new size banjo or find a used one (they are available). Any thoughts?

First, purchase the attached tool. Using the metric parameters measure the pitch & tap of the banjo bolt. An example but not necessarily the size dimensions as measured of the banjo bolt would look like example (14mm × 1.5). The first measurement is the diameter of the bolt which can be accomplished with a metric caliper. Once we know the actual pitch & tap of the banjo bolt an internet query for a helicoil repair kit in that size measured. Helicoils are the thread repair bits for stripped threads and better than new.

There are YouTube videos on the process of using Helicoils.

That's how we do it!

great idea, thank you - it's been 10 days since the thread and I still haven't removed it. I will however; be taking it to a shop to redrill and helicoil the threads. I also ordered a new banjo bolt as well

I am stuck - just assumed alternator has to come off first to get to oil adapter bolts. Any suggestions on how to move radiator component out of the way, with out literally removing every line and bolt. looking at front of car, I have the left intercooler out. Someone did say there is enough play to lift away from alternator/oil filter housing - but none the less, i've paused the work at this point

Hello @Jasonbrand57 ,
Please see my pictures below, and confirm that we are talking about the same banjo bolt, I believe that we are, as there is only one on the filter housing that I recall at this moment.

So, here is the issue, as you can see by my pictures, I do not see how you would remove the oil filter/cooler housing from the block while the engine is still in the vehicle, even if you sneak the alternator out the front, you are not getting to all the hoses and bolts required to remove said housing, I would not be working from the front, I would be working from the bottom, as you were able to get a wrench on the bolt to remove or tighten it, why are you not trying to work on the threads in place, is the engine mount in the way, I would have a better look at the underneath approach, maybe post some pictures.

I just call Jason Giannetti to ask if he had any tricks for removing the oil filter housing while the engine is in the vehicle, he said, "you ain't getting that out without dropping the unit", and as you can see in my pictures, I had the turbo off also.

I will see if I have any bottom pictures with subframe or engine support frame not in place, maybe that will give you clearance to work on the threads, and if you are thinking that you wanted to have the housing removed for drilling because of metal filings, I would leave the housing on the engine, stuff the hole with a strong fabric to block the filings, flush the hole with brake kleen, then use a dental pic tool to pull the fabric out after threads are done, then put the helicoil in.

Johnny

That's the one we're talking about. Yes, the support is there, so with the oil line in place and just enough room to get the banjo bolt in or out, I figured there is no room to manipulate any kind of repair to the inside threads (hence, removing alternator). I've got a new bolt to use, but please expand on the fabric and cleaning issue (sounds like the need to drill out remaining threads). This still sounds like having the car up on a lift, removing the support, then initiating the helicoil repair.

these are just from my viewpoint on the ground with regular jack on the support just high enough to move the wheels to get front bumper. Nothing that you don't already know.
