Tricking the computer to pass emissions test.
Tricking the computer to pass emissions test.
I can across this trick yesterday. After 8 months of resurrecting my new to me 2004 GT, I have been trying to get all the monitors reset to pass our states emission testing. I was getting 2 codes that turned on the MIL light. One was for low secondary air flow for bank one and the other was low convertor efficiency for bank one. My heart sank thinking i was going to have to pull the motor to do the converter before I could enjoy driving the car legally(In NY all dealer owned vehicles need to be inspected prior to sale, the car is in my dealerships name and I'm selling it to myself). Anyways I was checking the wiring for the Bank 1 O2 sensor at the 81 pin connector since I had several other issues with loose pins. After I removed the connector and reinstalled it the MIL light was off, VCDS still showed the codes as stored. I cleared the codes , drove the car again, completed all the Readiness monitors, got the 2 codes again, unplugged the 81 pin connector again. When I plugged it back in one code had cleared and one was still stored the check engine light was off and I took the car over and had it inspected, hooked up to the DMVs computer and it passed the emissions test. I was able to register the car today. I am still going to get this fixed, but this will allow me to drive the car now and do the engine out this winter. I don't know if this will work on other years or codes, but I am just putting it out there.
very interesting
i have has the same code, but have replaced all the associated parts for the bank one SAI , for other reasons, but still getting the code after resetting, this could be this ' bad pin ' contact you describe, where exactly is this located , at the main ECU ?
any pictures of the pin issue ?

I had several terminals in the 81 pin connector that were not making connect with the ecm, I did not end up having any issues with the terminals for the secondary air or the bank 1 o2 sensors. I still have the issues with those items that are throwing the codes. Removing the 81 pin connector on my bank one computer(the rear one) made the check engine light go off temporarily and still showed that all the readiness monitors where set according to my vcds. This allowed me to get the car to pass inspection and by me some time to get the problems causing the codes sorted it. The 81 pin connector is the larger of the 2 on the ecms.
