Hi to all.
Hope your all keeping well.
I have just returned from a 5000 mile Europe 3 week driving holiday.
I have to be honest and was keeping my fingers crossed that the engine didnt throw and codes..
It got me thinking about engine sensors, spark plug an coil packs.
So the question is does anybody know what sensors can be changed without engine being removed. I was thinking about having some critical sensors etc as spares so that I or a mechanic could replace the effected sensor instead of having the car shipped back to Scotland from europe.
Im sure I could do coil packs and plugs by the side of the road if I really had too , I bet there are a few more as well but I just don't know.
Thanks if you have that information
Frank.

O2 sensor bank one on the W12, it's not easy though
there are a couple of youtube videos and at least one
thread on this forum about the Bank 1 sensor

Reputedly bank 2 is a problem but I haven't yet experienced that.

Having looked up most of the engine sensors in the workshop manual, it seems just abour everything requires engine out.
Sensors I thought might be a good idea to store in the car are:
Knock sensors x 4......engine out
Air charge sensors bk1 & bk2 engine in
Cam position.....engine out.
Engine coolant sensor.......engine out
Crank position sensor. Engine in
Exhaust Gas Sensor bk 1 and bk2 engine in.
Oil level/ temp sensor. Engine in
Oil pressure sensor........coolant pack to be pulled out of the way.
Air flow meters Bk1 & Bk2 engine in

I wonder if most of the "engine out" have work arrounds.
Frank.

hi @Frank ( Sunnyside ) nice topic.

- egt sensor - the electronic part - just remove the intake manifold,
- egt sensor on the left (lhd) can be accessed somehow by playing with the wrench modification to get there as I heard, on the right - not possible to get without engine out per what I heard - need someone to confirm this

Hi, it is possible to change the egt on the right side, I built some special tool with a cut off wrench, welded on an iron strip, similiar to the tool Bentley has. With an induction heater and a lot of cursing I managed, but easy is something different...

Thanks for your input. I see the tool in the manual. Your correct, It doesn't look easy.

Iirc, if an egt fails it doesn't stop the car running normally. So if abroad there wouldn't be a panic to replace it until you got back home?

If the temperature doesn't rise, no worry. I also had a teperature scanner on board after it happened to me, just to be sure to have no "hotspots".

I think once you had an egt failure it would be time to slow down and just try and make it through the holiday. I would think a short blast of acceleration wouldn't do any harm without an egt ?
Thanks
Frank.

I got the check engine light, which was the only sign of the failure.

EGT failure
Quote: I got the check engine light, which was the only sign of the failure.
That was a bit strange in my case. In the bginning, the warning sign for engine overheating flashed up, there was a short drop into the emergency running program, and after 3-4 seconds everthing was fine again. Just as if another sensor was saying "What the heck are you doing there?". In any case, the warning sign disappeared after one minute in average. It might come back now and then, but never stayed for long. So I decided (also after consulting the forum) to fix it together with some other issues in the future.
Then suddenly the warning light came up a bit more frequently, but without falling into emergency running. So I decided to go for it and fix it together with sparks, coils, etc... I took my new RossTech VCDS and erased all failure codes, as my housekeeping battery went dead as well and I got a lot of stupid failure codes. This was a mistake as it turned out later on, as I should at least have saved it.
After the next warning light, I found it was the sensor on the right side of the engine, the Tricky one. Took a lot of effort and cursing, but I managed to replace it.
After driving around for a couple of miles, the warning light came back to my surprise, with the initial behaviour of dropping into emergency running for a couple of seconds. So what happened, both sensors were faulty, which I didn't see because I erased all errors as mentioned above.
What really made me cry, I had planned to change both sensors anyway, but for what reason ever, received two for the righr side 😖

I am dreading the bank 2 sensor failure, which seems inevitable.
At that point I will fix it and sell the car. It is simply not practical to service the car in my area of Washington, DC.
It is a work of art, but does not drive as well as my Mercedes and Porsche.

Have question about induction heater.
Do you have any suggestion what to buy (good quality for fine price) for the amateur/home service purposes - dealing with max 3-4 cars in the garage?
