Coolant leak

Morning All,

here in the south of UK temperatures have heavily dropped to -2 during the day and -4 in the nights during the last days which is quite unusual for this country. Lots of rain normally but not freezing temperatures. I frequently check under my Conti GT V8 s 2016 for any leaks and yesterday morning to my surprise noticed a small coolant leak (pink/violet colour) on the front right hand drive of the car (i,e, passenger side for a RHD car). It was slightly dripping from the front grill on the undertray of the car. Impossible to understand where it was coming from without removing the undertray - need to lift the car in a garage.

I park my car outside FYI

It probably lost 10ml of coolant and when checked the level was still ok so nothing major.

When I started the car and drove it (was clearly careful to check temperatures) it stop leaking. Parked it for an hour didn't leak. Last night left it outside with a tray under the area which was leaking and this morning didn't find a drop of coolant in it.

I will clearly bring the car to be checked by a professional who will pressurize the system to find any leaks but find very strange that its no longer leaking both when warm or parking in freezing temperatures.

I would think that probably and hopefully I have a loose clip or clamp and therefore with the cold shrinked letting some coolant out - fingers crossed nothing more serious.

Any ideas/thoughts or similar experience?

thanks

Filippo

I have no ideas beyond what you've posited but look forward to hearing what you learn. 10ml is a pretty small amount so maybe just something from the overflow tube.

noticed that the coolant level was way higher than the max line......very strange as the coolant was changed 12 month ago and never had a leak before. I can only assume it was overfilled when replaced but started leaking from the overflow pipe only with freezing temperatures......in any case removed some coolant and now the level is exactly between min and max and will now check if it still leaks in the next days.......

Morning All, as the car still was slightly leaking coolant brought it to my indy. Turns out to be a small leak from the coolant thermostat seal. Luckily it a cheap part (150 GBP from flying spares) and easy to reach and replace. Hopefully that will fix the small leak.

Guessing if maybe being overfilled with freezing temperatures this put pressure on that seal.....

regards

Filippo
