Long running saga of water in the spare wheel well started a new chapter today.
I have clear boot/trunk lid drains etc but after heavy rain and wind I get a small amount of water in the spare wheel well.
Today I took the trim panel that covers the boot lid lock pin and found the source of the water.
It's coming in through the round and rectangular holes marked in the photo. I could see water pooled up behind these holes. There is a channel between the inner body and some part of the outer body. Basically where the two skins meet, water collects and once there is enough it overflows through these holes and then down into the spare wheel well.
Still not 100% sure how its getting into the cavity between the bodywork though, but at least I can do some tests to see if water appears there when I dump water over the back of the car. It obviously has to accumulate for a while before there's enough to overflow.
Hi @rich9911 ,
That is very odd, I have seen were another member here posted a while back about the water coming in at the rubber vent flaps shown by the green arrows in my picture, but your water is above those flaps, is your vehicle RHD or LHD, as the oval and rectangular holes are confusing me at the moment, isn't that oval hole were the wiring harness comes through with a rubber gasket, as shown (the rectangular hole) on the left exterior of my black parts GT, you may have to pull the rear bumper to check all sealed joints.
It was me who posted a while ago. I thought the water was coming through the vent flaps but on closer inspection its coming through the hole, running down to te vent flap and then out into the well.
The round and rectangluar holes are on both sides. They go through the inner skin and as your photos show, they don't go thorugh to the outer skin.
The rectangluar hole is just above the corner of the vent flap. The round hole is further out towards the side of the car.
No idea what they are for.
I guess to investigate further I'd have to take the bumper off!
In the mean time I will try putting some water over the back of the car in different places to see when it appears in the seam on the other side of those holes.
@rich9911 ,
Is it possible for you to take a picture from deeper in the trunk to show the full right to left of that rear channel, maybe from the pass-thru in the rear seat area.
Is it possible that you have a rear window leak, and it is making it's way down what I believe is a channel of the trunk jam/quarter panel area, I am not 100% if the area depicted by the dots I put in the picture is a single layer, or dual layer, therefore making a channel.
Also, at the taillight area, I can not recall if there was a seam, it sure looks like it in my pictures, but that may be just shadow or light issues with the picture, I can not recall at this moment.
Had a good look around again today, did some more water tests. Still nothing showing up though. It's very odd. Almost like its getting sucked in when its wet and windy.
I managed to get the camera to get a pic of the inside of the bodywork and you cansee the channel runs all the way along the rear of the car. I can't see any sign of water where the larger oval holes are so maybe it is coming down from above via the bodywork around the rear glass.
You can see the damp in the seam behind the small holes (round and rectangluar) Looking in through the big oval hole fro the far edge of the trunk. The whole of the rear. Large oval hole to far left. Looks bone dry in here. wet behind the two holes to the right.
I even took the rear light out and poured water into the flat area under it. No leaks.
I think there might be a watermark on the inside of the body around the blue circle, so its possible its leaking down from above somewhere. Very hard to see with a torch and dental mirror!
Now I have all the covers off, I guess I just have to wait for another storm and then see if I can see any tell tail water marks.
