Ok,
Found a 2000 BMW X5 with 92,000 miles on it listed for $11,888. The only issue told to me by the dealer (major P-Car/Audi/Merc/Aston) is that the digital instrument cluster is warped (so some of the character lines don't function so on a digital dash, the number 8 could also look like a zero). So, I'm still going for an extended warranty, but also wanted to know any thoughts or info on what repairs to expect, or what should have been repaired (that I can confirm). I'm going to have the local beemer dealer do a PPI of some sort of course.
I offered them $9,000. Thanks.

My father traded his 02 4.4 in on a new x5 this past summer, over 3 .5 years of ownership he a couple issues. One being the cluster pixels, this is pretty common on these cars from what he was told $2200 cdn, problem with the adjustable air suspension, i beleive it was a sensor issue and fuel pump needed to be replaced. Outside of that just regular maintenance, it had the 20" 4.6 wheels, and with the agressive camber these cars are set up with, It liked new rear tires every 35-40K. BTW my father does alot of driving with his dd, picked it up with 35Kms, and traded it in at 187kms and was it still tight and running strong! He was very pleased with the x5 overall.
Bavorak - thanks for the info. This will be my wife's DD and she drives roundtrip 5 miles per day, so looks like you're saying should last quite some time. No belt replacements or anything like Volvo's at like 110K and acura/honda at 80K?
I'm not sure what the interval for the belt changes is, he had it dealer serviced so they kept track of that for him. As far as the engine and tranny goes there were no issues. As you already know, check for documentation of proper regular maintenance and you should have a vehicle that will prove to be reliable and suit your needs for the most part. The extended warranty is also good idea, when something does go wrong, it tends to be costly. I have read of some people having electrical quirks in their BMW's, within our family we have owned several and all have proven to be a good experience.
