Hey guys, Ive been thinking about picking up an e46 m3 as a daily driver and was hoping you can give me some advice. What would you consider a good deal/offer in these hard times for an 03 vert manual with about 55k and no warranty? Is there anything I should be aware of with regards to reliability? Thanks...

 

02-03 should come with 100k powertrain from BMW because of journal failure. It probably has expired-but check the service history. I've had 3 different E46 M3's

2002 engine failure/replaced by BMW
2004 no major problems/seats wear quick
2006 Comp pkg-under CPO warranty/upgraded audio and lights

There are some out there that are very well taken care of-(garaged)
Do a search on service/maintenance there is a link to all this

Thanks for the info. I will look into all service records.. Im trying to figure if the prevalence of engine replacement issues (i.e. vanos) is significant enough to invest in aftermarket warranty. The only reason I would want an aftermarket warranty would be incase the engine blows.

 

IIRC, the issues with the engine were worked on the 03.5+ models. The previous years do have the extended engine warranty though and most likely have had the recalls done.

 

I had an 03.5, FULL Dinan (no supercharger or throttle bodies), PSS9, BBS, etc. Sold it last Sept. for $30k

 

Fair price for that car ranges from 23-25k. If it has mods perhaps add $500 - 1,000. Friend of mine sold his 03.5 for $26k with aftermarket wheels and suspension in January with 43k on the clock and all options except navigation.

 

There are good deals to be had on theses vehicles, if its the kinda car your looking at....

 

Price for 55k is probably closer to $20-$21k. The 6speed is a big plus though!
