how common are the e46m3 SMG failures?
I am looking at a used e46 with high miles (122,000) and want to know if SMG should be a concern. I know the miles are mainly highway miles in this case but I will be pushing the car hard since plan is to turn it into a track toy. I previously tried this car at the track and loved the smg at the track. Thanks!
122K is a lot of miles but remember that the SMG is the exact same part number as the manual tranny, with a hydraulic arm on it. So, really the only thing that can fail is the hydraulic arm from my understanding. Because of the SMG's precise shifting, clutch wear is minimal.
I wouldn't worry too too much, but go get it inspected!
Oh, and if it's an 01, make sure it underwent the rod bearing recall
