Not an expert on this topic but I know when I had the e46 M3 the xpipe eliminated the raspy sound from the exhaust which I actually enjoyed so I ran straight pipes.

The x pipe will continue to scavenge exhaust pulses (creating a vacuum on the valve which makes a cleaner burn) straight pipe will never. Above approx 3k rpms the H pipe will not scavenge.

In my opinion the X pipe is a better option. By merging the two side of the exhaust in the X you'll get a much cleaner exhaust sound. Many people are stuck on the term "straight pipe" because it just sounds more bad-*** to say "I have straight pipes on my car". The reality is that straight pipes aren't always the best option.

Performance wise, you may not see a huge difference between the two, but in the sound the X pipe is much better. (in my opinion).
