What are your thoughts on the upcoming V8 twin-turbo M5?
That's only my opinion, of course.

The term "FAST" is relative and means different things to different people.

Agreed. Fast in a straight line is much different than Fast on a road course. Anyway, I also agree that w/o power (or torque), a car can be very boring. However, I also think that you can reach a point where you have enough power and that power will mean nothing w/o proper suspension setup. My last car was over 600 crank, but it didnt become really fun until the entire suspension was overhauled and tuned. THAT is when the car became truly special imo
i def believe the v8 tt well be more fun, torquey, and cheaper to mod so im all for it. dont get me wrong hearing a v10 reving that high sounds awesome too but just think when they crack the ecu and up the boost whats gonna happen
[quote=cohenfive;2922148]i have owned an e39 m5 for a long time now, and never warmed up to the e60 at all. yes it had that screamer of a v10, but it also suffered from a lack of low end grunt, was ugly inside and out (imo), had really horrible fuel consumption plus a small tank, and was overpriced to boot. the f10 m5 to me looks promising--more attractive,

I always find it funny how the old dudes who own ancient E39's have so much hate for the V10 M5 even on the M5boards where V10 owners dont hate E39's. Personally I think the V10 E60 M5 is a beautiful car especially in black. The regular E60 looks kind of ugly but the M treatment really transforms the M5 much like a regular A4 vs an RS4 or a low end E series vs E63 AMG.
It doesn't have huge torque but will still own an old E39 anywhere. The E60 M5 still looks menacing, modern and fresh while the E39 is 14 years old, and getting near beater status I think. Pretty sure most E39 owners envy the V10 model because its so much faster and looks so much better.
E39's are pretty slow by today's super car standards. A decade ago they were fast though, lol !
See how the torqueless E60 fares up against those super old dated E39's

I think E60 M5 owners feel the same way towards the F10 M5, pure envy but Im sure most E60 M5 owners will end up in them just as many E39 owners ended up in E60s and never looked back.

Yup Mdude888, those E60 M5's are sure pretty low and low end starved.
That E39 M5 sure showed the E60 off the line and low end.
The E60 M5 is a superior car over the E39 M5 (NA vs NA)
Now the new F10 M5 is another class of animal.
To the comments about easy tuneability I'll say again. Lets see how much you'll be able to get away with starting with the stock 21 psi boost level.
Anymore boost and there'll be a need to upgrade the turbos and internals.

I honestly cant knock the F10 until I drive it.
The E60 M5 is my first M car so I cant compare it to previous models. But from what I hear from previous E39 M5 and E36 M3 owners is that over the years the M cars are losing their souls and becoming more like MB or Audi.
I dont like how they are gaining weight as each new generation arrives.

Apparently all the soul has gone into the 1 series ///M
I like the direction of BMWs boosted M division cars. I'm with Diveextreme. Better starting point, as none of my cars ever stay stock for more than a week.
Might as well own a couple past M cars, and some new ones. That way you don't have to worry about "soul".
The E60 M5 is soul-less itself, no where near the driving experience of an E39 M5 IMO. Although the S85 is hands down a better motor, and more exhilerating, the car surrounding it is not.
Oppinions are like you know what however...
I'll tell you one thing, and thats that the new ones are FAR worse to work on.

I've owned three 996TT's... An 03', an 03' X50 and an 05 cab
I was never enamored by any of them - they were fast, yet incredibly boring cars... While my cab was in for service i was given a Cayman S as a loner, i honestly was saddened by having to give the Cayman back and drive my turbo back home - The Cayman was such a more entertaining car
The 996TT had impressed me by its stats, while in practice i was bored...
I went through three TT's looking for a car to suit my preferences... Hence, my Ferrari - a V8, 8500 redline, not a ton of torque, very fast, and wildly entertaining in every respect - My e46 M3 comes to mind as well, immensely fun car, yet low on torque - and wouldn't you know it, every V10 M5 i've driven also slots into the description above
BMW M cars were always high revving, naturally aspirated cars, low on torque, yet incredibly fun cars - it's a sad departure into the new M, and the cars, (and lag) will be boring
Obviously, you're a huge advocate of turbo cars, i prefer high revving, naturally aspirated cars - And that's basically, that
