03 M5 Pricing Help
Hi all:
I currently have a 99 911 Cab, and I have the opportunity to add a 2003 M5 to my garage. It's a great situation if the price works out, thus my need for your help.
2003 M5 - silver, 15k miles, original owner friend who is giving me the right of first refusal once he gets the bid from the dealer where he is planning on trading for a 997 Carrera S. He will sell me the car for whatever the dealer bid is, which I'm expecting to be around $50k, if my research is accurate. In your educated opinions, what would be a fair price for this car, and will the new M5 cause this version's value to continue to soften?
I once owned a 740il that had way too many issues to list, so I'm a little concerned about reliability with the M5, especially electrical gremlins. Also, please don't advise me to look at older models or other cars, as I will either buy this one or pass altogether and stay with what I have.
TIA,
Todd

'03 is the most desirable year for it is the last year of production and has DVD based Navigation. That car is a high 50's car on the open market with that mileage; 50k is a steal. Best of luck, I loved my '02 M5. A suspension and lower differential gearing make all the difference on that car.
I think that 50K may be a bit optomistic in terms of its actual retail value, however if your friend is just going to give it to you for what the dealer offers him, you may be close.
I consulted the dealer blackbook and Manheim Auto Auction's (Manheim is the biggest dealer auction company in the united states with hundreds of auctions nationwide) past auction values I would expect the car to be worth in the mid to high 50's...probably towards the high end if it's prestine.
Personally, I would be a buyer on the car at no more than $55-56,000. My father is looking to purchase one with 5K miles and we valued that one on the high end at about $60k.
P.S. I'm new here, I've been lurking around for a while waiting for my account to be approved to post. If anyone needs any manheim values, please dont hesitate to ask.
Hope that was helpful,
Jeremy

Thanks for the replies - to clarify, my friend will sell me the car for whatever the Porsche dealer offers him on trade. If I go forward, we will do it through the dealership so he gets credit for the trade for tax purposes and I'll buy the car for the same amount. I am still waiting to hear the bid, but I was figuring if they wanted to retail it for $58k or so, they would probably be offering him around $50k.
If I don't do it, is anyone here interested? The car is in Houston currently and the trade will go through Advantage Porsche on I-10 (or whatever the new name of the dealership is).
Thanks again,
Todd

My dad could potentially be very interested as he is in the market for an M5 or RS6, please keep me posted!

For those of you who might be interested - the car is Titanium Silver, and is in Houston. I have not touched base with my friend yet, but will talk to him by the end of the week. If I pass, I would strongly recommend this car to those of you who are interested. The owner is a car freak, and I think this is his 3rd M5. He cycles through high end cars fairly often and takes very good care of his rides.
Disclosure - I get nothing if someone else buys his car, and have no vested interest whatsoever. Just passing along what might be a great buy.

I had an '03 - One of the nicest cars I've ever owned in my life. Make sure you also get a Porsche battery maintainer - the nav unit in the trunk seems to have a mind of its own and will happily drain your battery if you don't drive it every day.
