X5 ending warranty period, sell or extend the warranty?
(also posted in the Off Topic forum)
My g/f has a fully loaded 2003 X5 that is coming up next month on the end of it's warranty (both time and mileage; it has 4 years and 49500 miles). She loves the car and an X5 has always been her dream car.
At first we were thinking that she should just extend both the maintenance and repair warranties for $1,500 and $3,500 respectively which would give her another 4 years and 50,000 miles. Then DJ posted some pics of the 2007 X5 and we were both intrigued. A trip to the dealer showed us that either purchasing or leasing one would result in the same monthly payments as we (I) have now, assuming a $28k trade in and a balance of $12k for the 03. The lease would allow us (her) to put the $16k towards other expenses/savings.
So, as I see it, the option are:
a) Buy both warranties for $5k
b) Buy the maintenance warranty for $1,500 and hope nothing goes bad
c) Buy the repair warranty and pay for/do the maintanence
d) Sell/trade-in the 03 and buy an 07 in January
e) Sell/trade-in the 03 and lease an 07 in January
Any thoughts?

Option D!
I'd say D because eventually something will start to break down
on that X5 and even with the extended warranties it would be too much
hassle to go back and forth to /from dealership more frequently.
So why not get a new one and have fun with better gadgets/performance/everything (imo) than the current X5 that would replace?
And personal thought, leasing cars just doesn't do it for me. No idea why.

e-- without a doubt--that way you will not be in this same situation again in 3 years--, but do not trade it in they never give you good value-sell it outright or to carmax.com
check back here when you are ready and I will tell you what the numbers for the BMW leases are (money factors and residuals)
use multiple security deposits BMW NA allows up to 7 depending on state in which you lease
this lowers the money factor(interest on the payment)--do this by putting down an extra 3000$ at sigining WHICH YOU GET BACK AT THE END OF THE LEASE it lowers the payment by 40-50 dollars which saves you 1400+ over the term of the lease..
no brainer--lower payment---great return--nice new vehicle--cash in your pocket
do not use cap cost reduction that is money you will not get back use the msd's instead
