Brake upgrade ?

On a 2001 Boxster base with 298mmF 292mmR can you directly swap out the calipers/rotors 318mmF 300mmR to the rwd 996 Carrera (same as Boxster S). Caliper bolts and ebrakes look the same from what I’ve seen, just need a second opinion. The 996 pad sensors have the same plug style as the 986 base correct?

Thanks for the clarification in advance

From everything I have read, I would say yes. Now on the other-hand if you go to the big red (i.e. on turbo) you must then buy the adapter kit. I would say if you are going to do the upgrade just wait till you find a set of big reds

The big red kit is made up of the 993 Turbo caliper + an adapter bracket correct? I have a few calipers waiting around and I think I may have these as well. Is there any one that sells just the adapter piece then? The stock caliper bolts 12x1.5x72, while the 993t’s are 12x1.5x77. I’m guessing the additional length would be taken up by the adapter bracket. Does the 993t pad sensor have the same connector as the 986?

I would say yes on the 996/ S brakes... I don't drill my pagids so my sensors are useless.... you can just zip tie them off.

The sensor Idea sounds like it will work fine for me too. Just found out that the rears would require some work to make the ebrake work I guess FVD has that covered in kit form. Is it even worth it for the 8mm is over all diameter gained? That’s only over ¼ inch more. The question is are the S rotors thicker?

I have read the fronts (996 or 986S) are direct bolt-on which seems to jive with PET. I havent tried it personally because I have an S. The rear calipers are also supposed to bolt on but need special rotors sourced from Brembo (perhaps also in the FVD kit). I have yet to be able to find the part number for the special Brembo rotors that allow you to run rear S calipers. The 1/4" difference would not be much of a deal, but you dont want to increase front brake bias. Yes, both the fronts and rears are thicker. To get more rear brake bias what you might be able to do is put the your front base calipers on the rear and use the special Brembo rotors. I have done this on my S (stock rear rotors) only now I am working on custom rear brakes (thicker and larger diameter) to get even more rear bias.

I have a base 987 and swapped it with a 996C2 kit which is essentially a 987 "S" kit. Everything bolted on correctly and yes the rear is a tad bit smaller, but I put them on right before the aKa Rally and had absolutely no problems with brake bias. Even on the salt flats, no issues.....

They are all Brembos kits or Brembo made parts, even the current stock ones are. The problem is adapting the ebrake to work with larger rotors in the rear. I’m waiting on FVD to get back to me on what is needed. It looks like the larger 996 rwd & 986s shoes/springs/adjusters are all required in addition to the adapter kit. I guess nothing is ever as straightforward as it seems in the beginning.

Here is a link to the kit. It almost looks as if they try to adapt the original base calipers to the larger diameter rotor. The S model ones are a few mm thicker though so I’m a little confused, especially since there is no additional info listed on their site. I know the new backing plate clears up the issue with larger ebrake shoes though.

Thanks for all the help and input

What FVD has is not at all what I was expecting. I believe the special Brembo rotors are the 986S rear rotors with 986 base parking brake drums. In that case, you would use the wider 986S (or 996) calipers. In the FVD kit, it looks like you would need the calipers in addition to the kit. There is a guy 'insite' on several Boxster boards (986Forum, in particular) who has the special rear Brembo rotors. See: http://986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7763 and http://986forum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14195 Beware, there are a lot of nay-sayers over there.

What are you trying to accomplish with the upgrade? Do you track the car?

Need more fade resistance. Since the calipers are old replacing or rebuilding isn’t that bad of an idea so upgrading is actually the most economical option. Fronts are just on, put to 325 over the 298 base. Now I’m just waiting on FVD for the info so I can get the rears done. Anyone have experience with the company?

Fade resistance? The stock brakes should be more than up to most track work (even on R compounds).

What pads are you running?

FVD got back to me. From the sound of the call back, they referred my questions to Germany. I was almost wishing I hadn’t failed that foreign language class! From what I deciphered, the two square caliper spacers (4 total) allow the adaptation of Carrera/ Boxster S rears and apparently the GT3 calipers. The two backing plate pieces adapt the rear shoes of the ebrake to the larger S model/ Carrera. The main point of the kit is to adapt the ebrake to the larger size which opens up many more rear brake options since the turbo and gt3 both use the same ebrake setup as this kit converts too. Smodel/Carrera rwd parts ebrake parts needed-

(set of 4) Ebrake shoes – 996.352.993
(2) Adjusting screws – 911.352.098.00
(2) Brake shoe bushings – 911.352.944.00
(2) Brake tension spring – 901.352.932.10
(2) Prake tension spring – 951.352.454.00
(4) Ebrake spring – 996.352.741.00
(2) Supporting plate – 996.352.807.01

There are a three more pieces to the entire assembly but they are not needed in the conversion.

I think the S rears should work out fine for now considering no endurance events are in my schedule any time soon. Its nice to know that the kit will make more options possible.
