Considering used Cayman S - what to look for?

Hi everyone, just registered today.

I'm searching for a used Cayman S to purchase. Is there anything in particular that I should be wary of? Obviously I'd like to get a CPO'ed one ideally, but what kind of reliability can I expect (this would be my first Porsche, or for that matter, German car, after driving only Japanese)?

Cant go wrong with buying CPO... If you buy private just make sure it gets a good bill of health before writing that check!

I'm interested to know what to look for as well. I am also looking to purchase a used Cayman S soon.

+1 on the cpo. My biggest worry would be body work or collision damage. There isn't a ton of "common" problems with Caymans that isn't the same as the other sports cars ie: water pump, alt, rattles what not.

I've noticed a lot of Caymans out there don't have xenon headlights. Searching on Google, I've found some sites that are selling "genuine Porsche" xenon headlight assemblies (and the halogen ones too for that matter).

How easy would it be to fit one of these onto a non-Xenon Cayman? Would it void a CPO warranty?

I haven't dealt with xenon retro-fits, be it OE or aftermarket. But in terms of warranty, a dealer could not lawfully void a warranty for something unrelated. Example if you had retro fitted Xenons they couldn't bounce you on a faulty water pump. On the flip side, they could deny you for smoked cats if you had say a super-charger (please don't do that). If you had the dealer you purchased the vehicle from retro-fit OE lights you should be fine.

The trunk clunk (caused by a weight in the rear lid coming loose) is a common problem and I believe there is a TSB or whatnot from Porsche that details how to fix. It's a warranty issue and most owners have had it done at one point or another. Only major issue I've ever heard of on the Cayman. Make sure all services are up to date and all that jazz. CPO is the best way to go if possible.

CPO is a "peace of mind" that you buy and the road side service is nice to have. These 987 and 997 are quite soild.
