boxster timing belt

boxster timing belt

can anyone tell me how often the timing belt on the 986 should be changed? ive got the 1999 model with 70,000 miles on the clock and it has never been changed. should i think about changing it?

Boxster does not have a timing belt.

you don't have a timing belt; you have a timing chain. while the belts, which are basically rubber, require changing at certain intervals, the chains, which are metal, don't typically require changing.

do you have a service manual? it should tell you when your major services are due.

Thanks for your help guys!
i was looking at a pic of a boxster engie and it showed a rubber belt and i thouht it was the timing belt!
so no need changing of the chain then? cant find anything on the manual!

Nope, barring something catastrophic you should never have to touch the chain.

But the poly-ribbed belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles.

oh, thats what i saw then, the poly ribbed belt. i have 70,000 miles on the clock, then its time i changed it! what is its purpose exactly?

Damon:
Some p-car guys advised me to keep the belt you remove as an emergency spare in case something happens while you're on a nice, weekend cruise in wine country.

The purpose of the poly-ribbed belt is to drive the A/C, the alternator, the water pump and the power steering pump.
If it breaks while the engine is running, all you won't have cooling, air conditioning or battery charging and the steering will get VERY heavy.

It's good to keep the belt you're replacing as a spare.
