Lifespan of tires

Got a brand new 2009 Boxster last year and have about 30,000 miles on it now. Flat tire warning came on and now Porsche service says I need to get new tires. Just curious is that the same experience you get for lifespan of the Boxster tires?

I'd be thrilled to get half that!

Track days eat tires.

30,000 is a whole lot of miles for one set of tires (rears especially).

Even without tracking the car...that's alot of miles, especially rears...I know that was said already, but it's so true.

Dr. Bill, where abouts do you live? I am an AZ. native, grew up in Scottsdale and had a bicycle store out in the Target plaza on Shea Blvd. in Ftn. Hills for over ten years.

What did your TPMS have to do with you needing tires? Coincidence? 30,000 is pretty good mileage. Depends on the tires - and most of us use relatively soft "performance" compounds. Cheaper, harder tires will wear longer but not be as fun.

Track tires and street shoes - different animals. I'm sure you have at least two sets.

Might be because the tire went flat because it was down the cords! 30K miles is pretty good tire life.

The only time I got near that many miles with the rear tires of my Boxster was when unbeknownst to me the alignment was off and the rear tires were wearing the inner edges severely. But even then the belts were showing.

With a proper alignment I can get nearly 25K miles from the Boxster's rear tires and twice that from the front tires. At both ends of the car the tire wear is even from side to side and across the tread faces.

If the tires are down to the wear bars then the tires are not legal to use -- years ago in another car I got a fix it ticket with rear tires at the wear bars -- and even if you don't get pulled over the tires are not safe.

Also, tires worn down that much they are more likely to receive a puncture -- the saying is the front tires kick the nails up, the rear tires pick the nails up -- so it is time to replace the rear tires, at least.

Sincerely,

Macster.

30k on a set of tires is amazing. But all the same now you have a chance to get two new sets. One for street use and one for play time on the track.

I have an '06 Cayman S with 31,000 miles on original tires, and there is still some tread left above the wear indicator. I'm pretty easy on the tires.
