Thoughts on Cayman R pricing

Hey guys,

So I'm a Audi 2010 S4 owner and my lease is due up soon, and after driving a C63, Golf R, Jag, and Cayman R, the CR has got my nod for my next car.

I love my S4, and may end up keeping it because I have so much equity, but there is something about the CR.

There are two I can choose from (less than 10 6speed CRs left in the dealers across the US) here in California.

One is a black one fully (more than necessary) loaded with red leather interior. Price is $90K sticker, but they will go below invoice to $76K for me.

The second is down in LA, white, $80K sticker that I can get for $73K.

The problem is I want to lease, and porsche is offering a horrible 49% residual on a 36 month lease; the other option is just to buy it and try to depreciate the car through my business.

Finally, there is another white manual CR with 1400 miles on it at the local Aston Martin dealership. It is fully loaded (would have been about $80K new), that I'm sure I can talk down to about $66K. No lease since used.

Thoughts?

FWIW, here’s my thoughts...

If leasing is the only way to go, then obviously that leaves out the used car with 1400 miles.

If you’re just going to buy it, you don’t keep your cars very long and are going to dump it in the next few years, I don’t see paying the extra 7-10K and would go with the white one if all cars are basically equal.

If this is a keeper (five or more years), then I’d consider getting the loaded, black one with the red interior.

My .02 worth....

Good luck, let us know what you end up getting.

I boughter my spyder used with 5800 miles on it... Saved alot of money...

I would buy it and resell it later.... The used car would be just as good ( not certified I assume being at a jag store) and has remaining warranty

The resale may be good on the cayman r for us since we are enthusiasts (6 speed cayman r.. Sport buckets?) but a dealership that you'd try and trade into just sees a cayman

If you think you'd buy it after the lease then it doesn't matter about the residual or you can hope you can sell the car on your own before the lease is up and get more than the buyout .. Either way...

Thanks for the input Mark. The defining aspect of the lease are the tax breaks; essentially 50% off the price of the car. However, at a 49% residual i may be throwing money away, as I will have no equity after dropping $38K into the car after three years; the question is whether the car will be worth more than $35K in 2015.

Porsche doesn't have high hopes for the residual, offering only a 49% residual on a cap of $77K. They are essentially saying the car isn't worth the $90K sticker, and we think the car will be worth 42% of its value 3 years from now. Not a ringing endorsement

You didn't mention years of the said vehicles but...

It would be thought that the car will be worth at least 35K simply because you can't buy a 2008 Cayman S for under 40K right now (true price probably closer to 45 and up)

Point is, if just a plain S that is 5 years old is still over 40-45K, surely an R will be worth 35K in 3 more years. (again, you never mentioned the year of the vehicles you're looking at)

No?

All the cars I'm talking about are 2012's (isn't that the only years the R was produced?).

Good to know about the CS resale value.

I really think I can get the R for $65K with only 1400 miles, or the new one for $72K (MSRP is $80K). Both are white. The black one for $90K I can get for $77K, but I don't need the extra options, and, I don't want a black car again

Thanks!

Sounds like the question then is lease vs. buy.

Thanks!
