ims bearing

I know the ims bearing issue has been mentioned a zillion times, but i was wondering, is there a way to tell if the ims bearing is faulty when having the clutch out? can you remove the flange and check if there is any play in the bolt?

The price to change the IMS out is few hours more plus the price of the bearing. I have seen first hand what happens when they let go.

What is the make and year of your car? The 987.1 M97 motors can't be retrofitted nor do they need to. It requires the case to be split open. I think there's a gasket sits over the end of the IMS where the bearing is that can leak and also you can inspect the actual IMS bearing but that's about it. If they need to remove the flywheel, I'd have them look at it.

A local P-car shop in S. FL is near completion on a solution to the IMS problem... http://blog.tunersmall.com/2013/02/1...-ims-bearings/

Check out the video on how it works...

I believe they're about to go to market with this product.

my car is a 1999 base boxster. it has 75,000 miles on the clock, and the car still runs like clockwork. Even the clutch is still good. But I was just wondering if whenever the clutch fails,I should just change the ims bearing as well.
Do you guys think that i should just change the bearing, even tough clutch doesnt need replacing?

lithium1330, that piece of kit would be great when it comes available.
but do you think doing it alone without the bearing replacement would solve the problem?

IMO, if you are doing the clutch, his suggestion on older car is to replace the bearing (like other said, the most expensive part is dropping the transmission to get to the bearing), and the shop mgr suggestion is to install the oiler at that time.

I'll find out what the price is in about 2 wks, but you can email the shop also to get more details.

LN makes a kit called the IMS Guardian that is an early warning system that detects metal particles in the oil and warnings you. Seams like a good thing to do if your not ready for a new clutch and still looking for some peace of mind. They are also the guys with the best upgraded IMS bearing kit too.

The oiling kit sounds interesting but I'd give LN a call to see what they think about that kind of a system.
