A question for folks who own a 981 S with PSE

Hi.

I'm wondering, do the PSE exhaust note change with driving mode ?

For example, with the PSE ON, does it sound different in normal, Sport or Sport Plus mode ? All driving mode driven the same way of course.

Thanks.

PSE is either off or on (quiet or loud). You can turn it on manually by pressing the PSE button in normal and sport modes. It comes on automatically in sport plus mode.

It does seem to burble and pop more in sport plus mode vs. having PSE on in sport and normal modes. Otherwise, the sound is the same. And it sounds great!

Thanks. That was the info I was looking for.

A question though, would it be possible that it seems to pop and burble more in Sport Plus because in this driving mode we usually drive more aggressively ?

Even when I am not driving aggressively there is a pretty good pop and burble in sport plus. But you do get more when you are at higher revs which typically means driving more aggressively.

Thanks !

I was thinking about a PSE retrofit at a Porsche dealer for my 2014 Boxster S, but it is about $6,000 CDN, which is on the verge to be insane as price so I'm thinking about other solutions involving the PSE mufflers, but without the PSE button in console and programming, like using an aftermarket valve control unit like the Fabspeed one. I just want to make sure that the programming they do at the Porsche dealer is only for the PSE "ON" to be automatically activated in Sport Plus or Sport for those without Sport Chrono. Just want to make sure the pop and burble has nothing to do with the programming they do. I just don't want not to end up with a solution at about $3,300 that will do that the PSE with valves opned will not sound like a PSE with valves open when installed at the dealer with the button in console and the programming.

You could just buy the PSE and have it installed without all the valving controls so that it would stay on (loud) all the time. If you did that, then the popping etc. would be more controlled by the sport/sport plus button engagement and your revs. Frankly with the PSE on in normal driving mode, it is not that loud.

I did this on my old 986S - installed PSE without the valving - and it worked just fine. Of course the 986 PSE is a very different animal from the 981. I bought my 985 PSE from Suncoast and had it installed after someone had rear ended me and the body shop was taking the rear bumper cover off anyway.

Does that help?

Yes that helps.

I learnt yerturday that the PSE muffler is by default in loud mode, so if it is not connected to a valve controler it is be ON (loud) all the time as you said. I guess I'll try to find one at a reasonnable price and install it without valve controler. And if later I want to have control on the valve, I'll install an aftermarket valve controler (cost about $200) which is not very complicate to install and it should work.

Thanks.

When you buy the PSE, you will get all the parts for the valve controls. Just leave them in the bag and see if you ever want to install it. My guess is that those parts will just stay in the box and you will be fine without installing them.

In Canada we can buy the PSE only at $2600 or the whole kit with button for the console and all the other parts for $3411 (in the USA it is only $2050 at Suncoast...). Here parts are way to expensive, that is insane. One thing is sure, if I end up buying a PSE it will be always ON when I'll ride alone but mostly OFF when there will be someone with me, as my friends do not like loud cars...

I have a 2014 Boxster S with PSE that the previous owner had installed. My car absolutely sounds different in normal versus sport and sport plus. In sport plus, it is loud, lots of pops, grumble, etc. In sport it has it as well, but much more subtle and subdued. In normal it is fairly quiet. I do have the PSE button in my center console to control the valve. I love it and would never buy a Porsche without it. I also recently added Fabspeed x-pipe exhaust tips and now it sounds even more amazing. That has been my experience.
