718 Boxster GTS cracked windshield
Would you let your insurance company (Safeco) have Satellite replace your windshield on a car with roughly 23k miles and otherwise hard to tell from new? Safeco is only authorizing an aftermarket windshield and wants $460 for the Porsche original. In Florida, the law requires an equivalent. (4) An insurer may not require the use of replacement parts in the repair of a motor vehicle which are not at least equivalent in kind and quality to the damaged parts prior to the loss in terms of fit, appearance, and performance.
Safelite Worked Fine for my 911S
I replaced my 2006 911S windshield in 2018 through Safelite; my car had about 55K miles on it at that time and has been pampered and is extremely clean. In my case, the original windshield had a previous chip repair and was getting a little pitted (not cracked), so I paid for the replacement myself since I just wanted a nicer windshield. 3-1/2 years later, I am still very happy with the results. I made a deliberate decision to have the windshield replaced at the Safelite shop rather than using their mobile service, and the decision payed off: the shop manager had experience with their Porsche windshields. Safelite windshields come to the stores with the window seal already on the windshield, but the shop manager recommended using an OEM Porsche window seal for the install to get the best possible fit. I had to make a second trip to the Safelite shop since they had to order the Porsche seal, but the install was very professional, everything looks perfect and I have been pleased with the replacement windshield. Would the results have been the same using the Safelite seal...who knows? Based on the professionalism I experienced, I do believe Safelite would make things right if there was a problem with their seal.
I realize some people don't care for Safelite, and there's definitely no down-side going with an OEM windshield other than the additional cost. However, I would not dismiss Safelite as a good solution for a new windshield.
