Convertible top opening/closing issue

Good afternoon, I am having a small issue with the convertible top on my 2007 Boxster.
I haven't opened the top in a long time, and when I tried this morning, it would open half-way and then stops, giving me a "convertible top not in limit position" message on the dashboard.
Going back and forth, I could finally fully open it, but the same issue appeared when I tried closing it.
Would it rather be the motor or the transmissions that I need to look into?
Thanks in advance for the help!

Replaced the convertible top motor and it seemed to do the trick.

***********UPDATE!*************

I had trouble with the top. would not go down.

Read all the helpful tips here and what I did is take the battery out.
charge it for about 5 hours.
Put the battery back in.

Reset the window alignments by bringing the window all the way down and push the down button for about 5 seconds after the car window stopped. same thing in the up position on both sides. Once I did that I could see that now my window on my driver side would go up and down when I opened the door just a few millimeters for the convertible top. It was not doing that before so that's why my top was not activating because that window sensor was not working correctly. Now it is so the top is working good.... just in time for the rain in Tampa Florida 🤥
