bolt ons for 3.4L swap in '99?

So after owning my boxster for 8 weeks, it puked its guts. I had Mind Over Motorsports in San Diego swap in a 3.4L engine. (they've done 4 of these in the last 30 days. I guess its getting to be a really popular swap...)

It is definately fast. But I just drove my dad's 3.6L 996, and it is a completely different level. This shouldn't be the case. I am running the swap on the stock 2.5L headers, cats, exhaust, intake, and ecu. So I know there is a big difference and my setup isn't optimal. Not to mention my ecu redlines at 6500 and the new engine is what? 7200?

So what ecu flashes, and bolt on combos have people had success with? This is my daily driver, and I reserve the really loud, comfort compromising parts for my race car. Anyone done before/after dynos? I can if people are interested...

Matt

Have you had it dynoed since the swap?

Well getting the dyno will help... but I will say that the stock 2.7 headers are killing you big time... you could get some aftermarket headers like those from dansk or fabspeed or go with some boxster S headers and some fabspeed bypass cats... the EVO intake will help alot too. It seems to me you have a bigger engine that still breaths like a little one

i totally agree. It was an unexpected swap, so I was doing the minimum with the expectation of upgrading down the road. The biggest thing for me, beng new to the porsche market, is I don't know who makes the parts I need. I suspect I could use:
headers
cats
exhaust
intake
ecu retune

Not sure what will get me the biggest bang for my buck, or what vendors make the best parts. I'm not looking to spend top dollar, if there was a "bargain part" I'd be most interested in that.

Any other suggestions?

Call IA they have a nnew favspeed exhaust on sale right now. Also have it tuned and a EVO intake 2500 or less to "wake it up" and if you want to go ***** out just Super charge it. the kit for the 3.2 should fit the 3.4 Hmmm 400+ hp sounds so fun in this car

I'll call IA on Monday. Thanks. the Favspeed stuff looks pretty expensive for what it is. I guess i am just used to the fabrication cost of Japanese cars. Gotta pay to play I guess...

I have a friend who did outsourced fabrication for a twin turbo kit for a boxster. I guess that would bolt right up. Might be cheaper just to do that than to buy expensive headers, cats, and exhaust...

hey matt,

I'm sure ryan told you, but in case he didn't. the first thing you should do would be to pull the engine cover and rev the car past 5000 and see if the resonance intake valve turns. If not call Newport porsche and ask for the tech named Stan and ask him how to get this to work. It might require a whole new ECU or certain wiring. This accounts for about 30 hp.

I believe there are only two makers for aftermarket headers, different vendors just slap their name on it. I used boxster S aftermarket headers on my swap. They are the same size as 996 headers.

remember it is the programing that is important to getting it to run. If you can lob an e-mail in to them today or tommarow asking about their friday after thanksgivig special sales they are running. As for the exhaust cost, trust me I know! I have never understood why a muffler for a porsche cost more then the headers back for a 350Z Oh well it is a (as I raise my nose in the air) Porsche.

thanks Patrick. I'll look into that. I suspect that there is a lot of pent up power in a ecu reflash. I just talked to IA. I need to get a baseline dyno pull, then I can document what the changes make.

Tell your buddy to contact me. I have a 3.4 swap for 3 years now and can tell you from experience that is would be better to buy a car that was done right than to take it to a shop and have an ongoing project with issues.
