Track Mods-Boxster
Looking to see what mods I need to get a SY 2001 Boxster track ready; it is a regular 986 (not an S
) with sports exhaust and B-K roll/harness bar extension. Prior track car was a dedicated 1988 911 "F" class car with total race setup, but sold it at the end of last year to buy a new (used) 996 GT3 which I will receive by the end of the week.
I am an Instructor and will use this car primarily for the track, also on the street somewhat and to/from the track for now. Suggestions re: Seats (GT3?), hardtop (advisable?), brake pads (Pagid/Hawk?), etc. very welcome. TIA
Feel free to email at icrelief@verizon.net.

seats... anything really as long as you can get the right mounts... if you want to keep the stock sliders then you will have to go sparco or recaro and see what BK has that will work.
Hardtop... if you have the BK bar it isn't a necessity, but I use mine... as do the Boxster Spec guys.
Pads... pagid blue or orange seem to be the flavor at the moment
Besides that... stock rear wheels (17x8.5) all around to allow for 245 fronts and up to 275 rears... coilovers (PSS9/motons/ whatever)... Sways- GT3 front, HR/ tarrett rear... you will need new droplinks with those sways as well... also when you lower the boxster a good bit you will have a toe problem in the rear, tarret has a solution. Front neg camber maxes out at around 1.5, you will need GT3 arms or a camber plate to get any more.
you will find a wealth of knowledge here... http://www.boxcar-racing.com/forum/ Also check out Todd's epiqautosport (all boxster stuff)

My daily driver (2000S)...

(please excuse the lack of padding in the pictures, don't have any pics with the padding installed)
Anyway, track things that I've done (not in any order):
Sparco seats on GT3 sliders
SPW quick release hub
Momo Apache steering wheel
Brey Krause seat adapters with passenger fire extinguisher
Stable Energies bolt-in roll gage
Team Tech 6 point harnesses
Volk TE37 wheels
MPSC tires
JIC Cross coilovers
CF front hood
Braille battery
Removed muffler
Performance Friction front rotors
Performance Friction pads (all wheels)
Cool Shirt
Issac head restraint
Allview rear view mirror
Race Technology DL1 data aquisition system
Toyota MR2 electric power steering pump (not installed yet)
Guys that know how to drive that have driven my car on the track are amazed and they were passing the twin turbo crowd.

Bruinbro:
Thanks for the pics and notation of mods; I believe the cage is item SD-P986 on the Stable Energies site, complete with description. Safety Devices cage distributed by Stable Energies. PCA Club Race approved, bolt-on door bars. Link http://www.stable-energies.com/products.asp?dept=155
So far, this is the best (safest) Roll Cage I have found yet that I can still use a hard or soft top and drive to work as well. Currently #1 on my wish list.

I sent a bunch of pics to Stable Energies after I did the install, they were nice enough to post them on a website here: http://uglypeoplesuck.com/s/misc/rollcage/
I bought the cage third hand, here is what it looks like out of the car:

Also, here is a pic of the Performance Friction front rotor:

Go ahead and PM me if you have questions. I might not have the answers, but then again, I might.

Are the Performance Friction rotors direct swap or did you get upgraded calipers? How hard was the install of the roll cage? Did you need to have it weld in? Sorry for the stupid question....i'm a newbie when it comes to these stuff

In order: The PF rotors are a direct bolt-in, no need for different calipers. The cage is a 2-3 hour job if your car is straight. turns out mine wasn't so it took over a week. This assumes you are reasonably mechanically inclined and have basic tools and a drill. Even though it is a bolt-in, the mounting pads have to be welded in in order to transfer the loads from the cage to the structural members of the car in the proper manner. It's a snap for a good welder, make sure you strip the carpeting out beforehand. I'll see if I can dredge up some welding pics.

get gt3 seat (weight is a huge enemy) these will save prob 40 lbs each seat if you have full power...get a roll cage...full exhaust, intake, software and r compound tires and you should be set!
