Portable Cool Suit

I will be getting a Cool Suit, due to Florida heat, and just noticed the new portable suit in a cooler type bag, which would also be handy when instructing DE. Has anyone purchased this, or tried it out? Thanks

Not sure what you are reffering to in terms of "portable". Got pics?

OK. Looks like they ust put the cooler in a bag (is the cooler just the bag or is there ahard plastic cooler inside?). Also, what do you power the pump with? Cigarette lighter or some other connection? I bought the Cool Shirt unit with the cylindrical cooler and I'm planning on making a mount for it in the front trunk with lines going to the cockpit for both driver and passenger. The electrical connection will be via some sort of positive latching connector.

I'm not sure what the "portable" factor buys you unless you drive other people's cars. The size of the cooler is the same as the hard plastic coolers.

Thanks Bro, you still need a switch connection for the pump, which then leads you closer to the hard cooler unit. Since I also instruct, I was looking for a possible portable unit, but may not be able to easily achieve that goal. BTW, where did you get the cylindrical unit? Seems like a good idea as it would take less trunk space.

The cylinder cooler was the only one I could get on short notice, although it turns out you can use just about any container for the ice/water mix. You just have to rig up the plumbing and make it somewhat spill-proof. Here is the link: http://www.coolshirt.net/racing-round-system.html

I have the 6qt bag in my car that is connected with a cigar lighter plug and bunged in place. But, I am not happy with it. I am either changing to the 12qt hard box or the 12qt bag.

The problem with the 6qt bag is that the ice is all melted after 2 hours. That is even the spec on the Coolshirt website. The other problem with the bag is leaking, if you don't get the zip bag zipped perfectly.

The 6qt bag might be good for an instructor to use behind his legs in the passenger seat. Because of the size and weight. But you are going to have to keep running to the store for ice.

Either way, you do not need a switch. The hard side cooler can also be wired by a cigar lighter plug.

I am having trouble deciding where to mount the hard cooler. For safety, and weight distribution the front trunk is best. But for installation behind the engine is a lot simpler, because I don't have to fish the line though the firewall. If I ever upgrade to an cool air system, I will want that in the rear.

I bought the 12-quart bag and just tried it and it seems to work fine; I'll know more this weekend when it gets the live trial at Sebring. I put the bag behind my 2001 Boxster's front seat and the mechanic hooked up a simple on/off switch inside the center storage bin. The coils then just wind around the back of the seats or possible even through the factory roll bars. I did not want the permanent box hookup at this time.

As opposed to the rear seat?

Anyway, how do you fit it back there? Is your seat pushed way forward?

Yes, it goes behind the "passenger" seat, which is moved a little forward. I do not have passengers very often, so it s/be easy. When I get my race seats, they will not recline but they will have sliders to move forward and back. You could also put it in the passenger footwell area as well and just route the wiring and tubing accordingly.
