Speeding in Alberta

Speeders in crosshairs

If you like to push the speed limit, you'll be on the cops' most-wanted list this Tuesday and Wednesday, say provincial officials.
That's the day all police forces in the province will make a special effort to nail speeders, says Jeanette Espie, a spokesman for Alberta Transportation's Office of Traffic Safety.
"For the whole month of April the concentration in the province will be on speeders, but on April 7 and April 8 there will be even more of a concentration on speed enforcement," said Espie.
She said movies, TV shows and video games often glamorize speeding, but it can often end in injury or death.
One out of four fatal crashes in Alberta involves speeding, Espie said.
Transportation spokesman Jerry Bellikka said collisions cost the province about $4 billion annually, the bulk of it for health care.
The speeding crackdown will be coupled with a media advertising campaign telling of the dangers of speeding.
Bellikka said the traffic safety office spends $4 million to $5 million annually on all of its media campaigns.

Speaking of speeding, anyone got any recommendation on radar detectors for the new "green light cameras" that will be in place May 1st?

HAHA ok you win Howie! My job depends on my liscence, which is my problem. Anything over 6 demerits they can suspend or even terminate me, and i currently have 4. My goal is to SLOW down a couple km/h, like seriously, who makes it from Edmonton to High Level in just less then 6 hours in a diesel? (for those who would actually go there) So how much for the Jammers you can get locally?

You can get laser jammers from tunerworks in calgary. There may be others but they gave a good price as we bought multiple before. The system that I have used is the Blinder series. Now they call the kits M25's for small cars and M45's for the bigger cars/suv. Apparently they have better sensors.

The unit will be about $450 give or take and then install. Dont know how much that will be.

I just ordered a passport 9500ix. It will be the first detector I've owned in close to 20 years of driving.

I'm thinking the 9500 IX would be a good idea. GPS and download able information is nice... then again, I don't usually speed (too much) in the city and you can see the giant honking red light camera boxes from afar.
