Lowering questions

Hi all,
I don't want to high-jack another thread so thought I would ask them here.

I don't have air suspension so I assume the only way to lower is to get the springs such as H&R, Eibach...etc..

1) I was told SUV lowering is different than cars. The SUV wheels will still be straight (instead of this: / \ ) so I won't have any uneven tire wear. No camber kit is needed for SUV lowering. Is that true?

2) Is it 'safe' to get H&R springs? What are the drawbacks to use the after-market springs?

3) If I get 22" without lowering, will my Cayenne be even higher from the ground? Will it look weird? If you have pics of 22" on your un-lowered Cayenne, please show me...

Thank you in advance for any feedbacks...

John

Drawbacks to the H&R's would be ground clearance and a slightly stiffer ride, Eibach is more comfortable and has a slightly less aggressive spring.

I had 22"s on my cayenne without a lowering module, not my cayenne has PASM which is oem hydraulics.

Cell - it depends on what you are trying to achieve with your look and your ride comfort. I have PASM with Air Suspension and will add the lowering links to drop it to the loading level and keep it there. From speaking to several people I think that the loading level is the lowest someone should go because of the shortened travel of the suspension at that level. It will reduce my ride quality but it is something I am willing to give up to achieve the look that I want. Of course I have three selectable ride qualities so that would help out with the lowered height.

The H&R drop it to:

1.3 in the front and 1.2 in the rear - for S.

1.6 in front and 1.6 in the rear is for the 03+ non-S

The Eibachs drop it to:

1.4 front and 1.4 rears.

I like the more aggressive drop myself. I don't think you can go wrong with the Eibachs.

Too bad they don't make a 2" drop or 50mm that would be nice for the Non-Air SUVS..

Cell - isn't this your wife's car? If you do lower it - I would do that first and then see if you need the running boards since they don't really seem to offer much step support. It looks more cosmetic than functional.

MeanMachine and Alpine,

Thank you for your info... Very informative. So are my tires tilt like this: / \ using springs?

Alpine, yeah..it's my wife's car... and I always thought running board would help getting out of the car more easily... Thank you for the info. I really appreciate it.

Here is my car when i first put the 22's on it with the stock ride height. It looked horrible. The car was very lifted and it was a lot more pronounced with the 22's over stock wheels. The second pictures shows it right after I put the H&R springs on it. My biggest regret with this car is that I didn't order air suspension because I would really love to bring it down even more...

Hyboost,

THANK YOU! Love these examples! I think if I don't want to go the lowering route..maybe I can go with 20's and keep it at stock height?

Btw, we love the color of your Cayenne..I believe it's your wife's as well? GREAT COLOR! We actually were looking for that color but they don't have that in 08 any more...

Thanks.

Cell - without the expense of going for a full coilover suspension I would keep it stock height and get some nice 20's to fill in the gaps a little. Go for a little taller tire in the 20's and maybe a little wider to give it a better stance. If you get a rim that pushes the wheels out to the fender wells it will look just fine. 22"s without lowering to me looks awkward. The OZ Canyon is a large wheel to start since it doesn't have a lip.

Here is a pic of a 20" wheel without lowering. They are running a 275/40/20

Cell you can order Porsche's 17mm rear wheel spacer to bring the rear wheels inline with the fenders or as you can say to the edge of the fenders giving it a sportier, subtle and wider stance.

Alpine and Mean, thank you once again! Yeah...looks like 20 is the one to get without lowering. Thank you for such great example!

Question: Are the Eibach's self installable? Or do they need to be installed by a tuner?

Really depends on your ability. If you are mechanically inclined then you can figure it out. I fortunately have Air Suspension and will use lowering links.
