looking at a 2004 cayenne s
OH dear, where to start.
Get a third party warranty before 50K.
Seriously I do not know where to start. I have had one from new, now $70 mostly trouble free but oh boy the thing that have been changed over the years under warranty. Just make sure the dealer was doing service as a lot of things will have been done automatically.
Do some searching, here and at Rennlist

Check to see if it has the updated cooling tubes. It is an issue you don't want without warranty and porsche isn't exactly helpful if the tubes crack (and eventually they will). It is an issue to be checked especially for people in warm areas like socal. Don't find out the hard way, like me.
Seriously, stay away from the 03' and 04' s. I agree with vivaleduc, start with 05' or newer. I've been to the dealer soo many times for soo many different (niggly) things. Without a warranty, you'll be in for a lot of pain $$ :<(
I have an 04 Cayenne.
Right now the...
- right cornering light is out
- side lights are out
- back window nozzle won't spray
- cigarette lighter in the front is broken
- pcm will sometimes give an "amp not available" warning and the only fix is to turn the car off.
AND
the headlights are cracked on the inside similar to this http://cayenne.rennlist.com/cayenne/forum.htm
In the past the...
- coils were cracked
- the headlights had condensation inside
- the drivers side seat would not move
I have moved to a different city and the local dealer refuses to give me any type of loaner car. I've called Porsche headquarters. They also refuse to provide any type of car. So I'm stuck driving the pig with all these problems until either my family comes in town or I have some time off during the week. (not anytime soon) This better be your second car or you better be 'in' with the dealer or you're gonna be screwed. To top all this off the dealer has seen the headlights and informed me that i'm going to have to take it up with the district manager to get a fix. Be ready to spend some serious time getting repairs.
Moral of the story: Get the latest model cayenne you can, because you want to stay far far away from the '04s.
